For the German readers, or those who know how to use Google Translate, an interview with Mark Webber looking back on his time with Herr Vettel and leaving Formula One.

"Today I have a better time with him than during my time racing against him. They were amazing battles. He's a world class driver. It was not always easy on the track, but I enjoyed the fun."

He doesn't miss Formula One though. "If I did, I would have made the wrong choice. The timing was perfect to stop, because I still had the desire to race at a high level such as Formula One. But of course, it did become more challenging every year."

Newey warns F1 of 'grave danger' over engine performance rules
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/114405

What are the chances of RBR quietly planning a breakaway series to rival or threaten F1 in this current state?

Well, if they're gonna use something like X1 then I'm all for it :D You wouldn't even need any real racing, just sheer speed of the cars would be enough to stun you mindless.

I didn't see him complaining about the engine freeze in the V8 era.

RBR came to F1 purely for its marketing value, if F1 audience and entertainment value starts to wane and cost continue to spiral upwards, I wont be surprise they could be planning something crazy in the background.

Because engines were more or less equal and freeze actually made SOME sense. It makes no sense now.

His argument was that the V8 engine development was already matured when FIA decided to freeze it, so between different manufacturers the gap is very small. For this year, Merc was consistently around 2 sec a lap quicker when they go flat out and its very obvious how Merc engine has changed pecking order for this year.

His argument is flawed then. The V8 engine freeze happened significantly before exhaust blowing became a thing. The result was that one team (coincidentally, Newey's team) gained enormous advantage from having an engine that happened to match up with that well, and from the fact that the other teams could not change their engine.

I mean, I don't blame him for pointing it out now - all F1 teams not gaining from it will point it out now, but it is still highly hypocritical.

I thought exhaust blow diffuser is something to do with exhaust layout, aero design and engine mapping rather than the physical engine construction? Which mean the horsepower still remain constant

His argument is against freezing the engines. You want the engines frozen?

By what logic? The engines were frozen IRC 2 years into the introduction of them, I wouldn't consider that very mature. Furthermore, the rev limit was continuously reduced even after the engine freeze, less than ideal considering the engines were designed to spin a lot faster. It seems a bit a lottery.

Well, in comparison switching from a V10 NA to V8 NA wasnt that much of a big leap in technology and manufacturers were given 1 complete season before the freeze kicks in. For this year, switching from V8 to V6 + Turbo + Kinetic + Heat recovery was a gigantic leap, while engine was homologate at the start of the season.

There were a lot of rumours circulating that the construction of the renault engine with butterfly valves meant that their engine was much more amenable to constructing bizarre engine maps than either the Mercedes or Ferrari one.

Bellismo!

Only Newey would argue it's aerodynamic irrelevant of how it was attained. Thing is, now that engines have come into the mix as game changers, Newey wants to head onto other pastures?
What about the engine guys who had their hands tied for years? This current Formula may not be perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a bit of payback for creating aero hero's(no names).
And yea now we have pony heroes. But what if we had aero pony hero's, or....ahh forget it.

So all the championships he's won, all the drivers he's helped put on the mantle, all the silverware collected, all the champagne tasted, all the controversies, the deaths, the highs, the lows, the sacrifices he's made for F1 at the cost of his family, the long hours, long weeks, long years... and yes, the constant bites at the ankles from some....yep, bet that had nothing to do with it.

We should be glad Newey knows when to leave - let some new blood in - while being around to help when required. God knows some others in F1 simply don't take the hint.
