Become MotorSport Engineer

Post

Dear Forum,
I don't usually post here because I am now learning by reading you all, daily I come here to read and understand more about F1, but now I need your help. As you may remember, I asked for some tips for buying a Technical book (which I bought and will arrive soon). Now I was looking for some help deciding what to study to become a MotorSport Engineer.

I have actually asked several GP2 teams, Spanish teams, and a GT team from Spain. Some recommend me England, others Aeronautic and so on, but I would like to know the opinion of someone who works actually there or who knows about it. This is because in two years time I will have to take a decission, and my career will probably depend on this. I will consider every tip, help or comment.

Thanks in advance from Spain,
Gorka

Well...from my own experience...I'm in aeronautical engineering...will be finishing the degree next year (5 year degree) and wll probably go to Cranfield for a Msc in Racecar Management & Engineering.

Try getting the maximum experience you can...I participated on my own 3 times in the Shell Eco Marathon with prototypes I built at home, by myself.

I've learned to weld, composite construction and a lot of mechanics.

Since January this year I've been working for a sports car team here in Portugal. Being a small team I do quite a few things:

- composite repair and construction;
- part and equipment design;
- car preparation;
and also the dirty work...washing the parts, wheels and vacuming!

I've even done sponsor negotiations! :lol:

Besides this I'm the technical director for a 3 year project, within the team....

Also I took a CATIA course....I work with FEA and with Fluent. And I'm learning at the moment to work with the Lotus Engineering suspension software.

Though I do have the dream of reaching F1...I'll probably open a consultancy company motorsport orientated (it's already being taken care of).

Basicly get as much experience as you can get!

Here's the car I work with:

Hi everyone...well...manchild yes! I'm still alive...but with so much work that the internet has been a luxury! I used to talk with Tomba almost every week...now it's been over a month since we last spoke!

My graduation project....little work has been done...the last couple of weeks I've been trying to run Fluent...only last week we finally folved a license problem...so in a few weeks I'll return to my project.

On Thursday I'm going to Porto (250 km from where I study) to represent the team (the team manager can't go...so I'm in charge :lol: ) at a Press Conference with the drivers....then drive back....and on Saturday drive back to Porto to present the car to the Press at the Boavista Futebol Club last home game of the year. We are sponsored by them...we will also be presenting the new livery!

Today I spend 7 hours fixing the composites...small cracks and reconstruction of one section....I'm exausted.

Next weekend (18-19) we have the European Hill Climbing Championship race here were I study and since the team and some sponsors are also from Covilhã, so we have to race....the following weekend we have a race at Estoril for the Sports Car and Prototype Championship...

Well no we don't tune the engine....we use the Honda K20A engine...it's a Honda Civic engine...the japanese version! And it does have small changes...it has 254Hp! The engine is prepared by RDM (at Le Mans)...I think thats their name...if anyone knows their contact let me know! :lol:
