there are many theories...the expanding and contracting universe is one of them...it is said that after the big bang the next thing is the big crunch...read it in Stephen Hawking's 'A brief history of time'...well, its according to us humans that the ultimate speed is 'c'...and after that, the effect will start to precede the cause blah blah...who the heck has ever checked it coz you cant! travelling at 'c' is IMPOSSIBLE, unless you re in the molecular state....the best theory for the universe is that it is expanding, and ll keep expanding forever, so pretty soon, every galaxy ll be far off from each other, and we ll have a lonely universe!

Well, even if we were anywhere near it..say 10000km/s , it wud have been a thought...but all we have achieved is i believe 20km/s(not sure, maybe more)! which is way off 'c'..!..so i guess it IS impossible

ps: the Big Bang theory isn't the only one, by far so if you pick another, then all those judgements about 'the size' of the universe and it's expansion fall apart

Naw, not even close. The soonest time to worrry is 2029 when 2004 NM4 makes it closest approach. Odds are only 1 in 300, so I wouldn't be alarmed.

well..ill call it thinking the unthinkable .... but i have a feeling that there s nothing like void, some matter exists everywhere...its beyond human comprehension....the only thing im afraid of are the black holes...thinking about singularity scares the --- out of me!! they re bloody mysterious

im not saying my physics book is complete, but it's based on scientific research, isn't it? Anyhow, try imagining sitting inside a sphere, and asked to describe it inside out!! same situation here... the discussion is endless. It's like discussing evolution!!!!

Well, think about this... Few years ago I've joined SETI at Home, downloaded one data pack and after a while hard disc on that PC died without analyzing all of the data. What if in that data pack was a message from a distant civilization? What if next such message will reach radio telescopes on earth in 1000 or 1000.000 years or never again?

this may be true manchild, but there is a little problem there: how would u know if they have the same technology we have, or if they are in the same evoltuion phase. when they say life on other planets, or in other galaxies, they don't really mean humans, or "aliens", but any living form, even a single cell.
Today i was having this discussion with my physics teacher. I followed his speech untill he started talking about relativity, and how mass changes when traveling at the speed of light.. at that point, i crashed and burned
