Story behind 60's Ferrari light blue wheels/overalls?

I've always seen photos of older Ferrari's with light blue wheels and overalls but I never understood why they had them. Does anyone know the story behind it? Is it just something they decided to do? Azzurri connection maybe?

I would suggest that dunlop made sure the brand's blue colour was prominently displayed.

National colours = flag colours, red white green.
Racing colour = red

The colour "Powder blue" was very much in style back in those days. It just looked cool, that's why they used it?

In 1964 Enzo Ferrari had a row with FIA and allowed NART to register his cars (158 F1) for racing in US. Livery was white and blue. Ferrari's tradition of red for everything was not that well established: after all, back then, Ferrari was a mediocre team with not a lot of success.

Not like today, when they´re a mediocre team with less than not a lot of success


Back in Europe cars were painted in red, wheels weren't.

That or the sport colour was changed from dark blue to cyan...

... or perhaps it's a nice "powder" colour that goes well with red...

... or maybe it's because people back then were high on LSD and The Beatles had a pool in Abbey Road of the same colour.

The Ferrari cars with "Cambridge Blue" wheels were the Colonel's cars. Maranello Concessionaires racing identification. The colour was inspired by Colonel Hoare after he used it to hide a horrible green stripe that Ferrari had painted down the side of one of his racing cars. The green was for the British racing colour, but the colonel thought that green was bad luck.

Thanks for the picture of John Surtees in his 158.

The BBC showed a new program about Mr Surtees this weekend. It showed him riding his MV Agusta and his collection of Ferraris ,including the 158.

They told how ....

On his first outing for Ferrari at the 12 hrs Sebring race , He had setup his 250p a week before...only to see it given to the rival Italian Ferrari drivers by team boss Dragoni ,he,Surtees being told to drive a brand new unfettled car....

However...Surtees went on to win the race.

A complaint againt Surtees was lodged .... accusing his car of not completing the full amount of laps.....

The complaint came from his own Ferrari team. It was Surtees girlfriends record of the race and timings (matching the officials) that saved the victory.
