I don't know what to make of this...
Maybe they want to see how much closer the competition is before deciding which upgrades to bring to their PU.

I don't see the point of that if you are "sitting" on 50 horses.

The idea that they are already in the diminishing returns might not be so far fetched (if this proves true).

If they find they are still ahead with their 2014 PU, they could save their updates for even larger performance gains than already available or even wait until the end of the season, effectively rolling the tokens over to next year.

I think this is most likely.
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

It makes sense to start with the 2014 PU as it lets them get reliability in to the 2015-spec unit. I'd be amazed if any team starts with a non-2014 PU (other than Honda, of course) for this reason. Better to get points at the start of the season rather than have a DNF or two whilst you iron out any issues in the later-spec PU.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

By Mercedes not using any tokens does this mean that the average tokens that Honda will be allowed in 2015 will be quite high?
Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.

I wouldn't be surprised if actually all manufacturers use 2014 PU at the start of the season. So this could allow Honda 32 tokens?

Surely if the other manufacturers are changing to a Mercedes-like engine architecture they would want to get this running as soon as possible to gain experience with it?

How many tokens will it take for Renault and Ferrari to at least get to the apparently superior packaging of the Mercedes PU (log exhaust, split turbo)?
No one will want to redesign their car mid season to accommodate that change.

Looks like Ferrari, Renault and the FIA have shot themselves in the foot this time, if their initial thoughts were to hold Honda back and close up to Merc. Now Merc has a bigger chance of more teams squabbling over the leftover points behind them.

Wouldn't be surprised to see another plot twist soon though!

I think this is old "news" quoting from an AMUS article from last week...

Omnicorse.it reported now that Merc will now start with the "new" 2015 engine (whatever this means tokenwise, maybe all 32 ), after the FIA to allow Honda tokens on the "average unused token rule".
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

It would make sense for other engine manufacturers to try and hamstring Honda by introducing as many tokens as they can early, lowering the average number Honda would be allowed to use.

That's what I mean, if they are adopting this packaging it really has to be done now...

And wouldn't that have been the plan anyway before Ferrari and Renault got confirmation of the homogolation loophole?

I am not sure if exhaust piping is locked or specific to the engine manufacturer

Teams used to make their own exhausts in NA engine days not sure if that has changed. Of course the entry into the turbo is kind of locked.
