Viso's heavy crash in GP2

Post

Did you see this chaotic Magny Cours race?
Right at the start Dallara team mates Zuber & Glock collided in a ridiculous way, as they were both on first row, then Ernesto Viso had a HUGE crash in the first lap, reminding very much Kubica's fly & crash from Montreal.

The crash looked very bad as the car flipped while flying, and landed heavily upside down on a concrete wall. I fail to find a vid but in some way this crash was even scaryer than Robert's one... Last news I heard spoke about head trauma but stable state for the Venezuelian.
As if it wasn't enough, N. Lapierre then ran over one of his mechanics while pitting in the general confusion.

--> Before the end of lap 3 the race was red flagged.

It was definitly one of the most dramatic race start I've ever seen...
In the end the race started again 45mn later and Giorgio Pantano took win without further dramma.

Fortunately Ernesto Viso is ok, and he will just stay this night in hospital for deeper observation. I think that is in these situations when the work of the engineers is really shown.

yeah...apparantly the part he rolled on on the wall was literally about 6 inches away from his head...just on the front of the cockpit...i think if he'd of actually landed on top of his head there this could of been a different thread altogether!

Lucky lucky bloke...

he obviously just caught the two rear wheels of the cars in front...still can't beleive it launched him like that!!! And i bet those marshalls cacked themselves...they weren't too far away from the action either!!!

both incidents. the one at the start is funny, rookies at play!

As for the "Best grind ever by an F1 car" well tony hawk would of been proud. I am with you on the stewards, from the angle its shot at it amost looks like it slides over there head.
I believe in the chain of command, Its the chain I use to beat you till you do what i want!!!

Here's one from youtube:

One lap later one of the drivers even hit one of his pitcrew members, possibly distracted by the accidents that passed by.

I must say though that Kubica's crash looked worse, but if Viso would have rolled over that barrier on the helmet, well... :?

I couldn't tell whether he hit that bridge structure thing... I don't think so... that would've been horrific if he had though.

I've been following GP2 since it started. They do have great races, usually more exciting and eventful than F1. The cars are fast, very fast. The drivers are mostly young kids who have everything to prove and nothing to lose and it shows in the races.

It's a good thing those cars have to go through the same collision test than F1 and have the same safety equipment. It might've been fatal, if they didn't.

Anyway, I highly recommend everyone to follow the series. Even if you're only into F1, cause you get a "preview" of the next seasons rookies in F1. ;)

that dude that hit his pit crew member is just plain stupid. what an idiot. not as much as the two teammates taking each other out, even though they both were on on the front row

Man that was quite a chaotic race!! far more interesting than F1 today. The accident was just plain sick, amazing, once again, that Viso is ok!

There is something else that bothered me, during the race, one of the presentator made a comment about the driver Pastor Maldonado, saying he was 2007 Monaco winner. The name rang a bell, but I didn't know why it was familiar, untill I found back this topic:

Is it the same driver?! How come a driver banned for life in the principauty can win there two years later? Has the ban been lifted or is it just homonym driver? :?

I'm sure he probably dropped a few millions at the casinos there, and considering that that's source of income there, they thought his presence in the principality would be justified from now on.

Mr. Maldonado wasn't banned for life. He was banned for four races.

Seeing the car flying convinces me even more that something must be done about this characteristic of flat floored cars.
