This bodes well for Mercedes, and the Mercedes customer teams.

Nico seems convinced Ferrari are fast. Either he's just bluffing and pulling the wool over our eyes or they are genuinally quick:

Q7: Are you looking forward to Australia? How do you rate your chances this year?

Nico: I'm obviously looking forward to it a lot. I'd like to win again like last year. I think we'll do well, but we need to watch out for Ferrari who are really fast.

It makes you wonder if the whole Ferrari story of them being late with their car has been a way of distracting their opponents! It seemed a little bizzare they could be late with their car after such a poor season...

Aldo Costa on the W06, mainly points:
-the car seems an evolution but actually it's a revolution
-we used 2015 PU
-in Barcelona 1 we'll have a mechanical evolution on the PU
-in Barcelona 2 an aero update

Talking to a friend who works at Mercedes he told me that no new parts on the engine for the Jerez test, must be saving those tokens for mid season.
Why upgrade your engine when they had such an advantage over everyone else!

I don't follow you there. People who were attending the test noticed obvious differences on the PU, and from all the comments we got from the relevant teams, they are not running the 2014 PU.

Even Williams confirmed this in an interview with f1fanatic.co.uk:

From what he told me it wasn't a completely new power unit as it was so good last year, they have changed a few things to make it more reliable but apart from that nothing really new i.e they have only used 3-5 tokens so far. So I wouldn't call that a new PU.
I presume the rest of the tokens will get used maybe after the testing is over or through mid season so they can find out where they really need to improve.

Aldo Costa words:
"“Confermo che abbiamo usato la nostra nuova power unit, diversa dalla precedente. Ci sarà anche un’evoluzione meccanica già nei prossimi test di Barcellona, poi uno sviluppo aerodinamico nell’ultima sessione, come credo faranno i nostri concorrenti”.

"i confirm we used our new power unit, different from previous one. There will also be a mechanical evolution, already in next Barcellona test days,
then, an aerodynamic development in the last session, as i believe our concurrents will make aswell"

They don't have to be using tokens until the homologation date. They can use any evolution of the power unit and any upgrage slated for it's respective tokens, and still not have to make a submission of tokens. At least this is what I understand.
I feel it's only after the homologation deadline are they restricted to using different upgrades, and have to submit tokens.
For Sure!!

Have you been living under a rock? There is no homologation date for this year - its wide open all year.

Ringo might mean the date Mercedes chooses to do the first homologation. After all you do need to homologate your PU before you are allowed to race that. However, you are allowed to homologate as much as you want until december 31st.

So let's not jump on eachother's back, because there is always a chance he got it right and you understood him wrong!

Maybe your friend works for Mercedes, Not Mercedes AMG F1... guess he just wants to feel important.

I think you are correct. The car doesn't have to be legal in winter testing so they can use any experimental parts they like in testing. There is no date for homolgation this season so the token counter starts ticking with the updates they bring to Melbourne.

To correct the terminology, the existing PUs were homologated once, ie 28th Feb 2014. After that tokens are used for any updates. As I mentioned in the unfreeze thread:

  • The PU used in 2015 will be the 2014 PU plus modifications during the year using the 2015 tokens
  • In 2016 the PU will be a 2014 PU with 2015 modifications plus additional modifications during the year using the 2016 tokens.
  • In 2017 the PU will be a 2014 PU with 2015 and 2016 modifications plus additional modifications during the year using the 2017 tokens.
