Mercedes AMG F1 W06

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

No. But the Merc does seem to have a shorter wheelbase then the Ferrari though.

Anyway, increased contrast by a couple 100% and you can see on the tarmac it´s a fake.
You can see the copy tool being used near the Ferrari front wing.

Even if it is not absolutely a real photo; Considering the fact that, the cars look identical in length at front, the rear seems to be so much compact compared to Ferrari and being shorter at the rear, takes away a lot of weight, makes the car more compact and helps the air underneath and from side pods to reach the diffuser faster and with better velocity than, let's say for Ferrari. Overall, it does makes a lot of difference.

I agree that the Ferrari seems longer, but love to see the mclaren added to this comparison.

I've said since the beginning that one of the reasons they're able to package so tightly is that they have more room to fit everything in - I.e. It's a much longer car

It' obviously a cut and paste. Ferrari looks bigger because of perspective (our brain expects that more distant objects appear smaller). Just check wheels size.

Looking at the photo, it appears as if they are two different spec race cars. From Front Wing and Front tyres to driver's head, the front of the car looks of same size. Then, there is drastic difference in the second half.

The Mercedes is next to the Ferrari car is the shortest in the field. Which is relatively at wheelbases to 3.50 meters "short". Modern Formula 1 cars are just too long. The engineers have succeeded in spite of compactness to provide as much air as possible between the front wheels and side boxes. This helps to calm the turbulence behind the front axle.

Wheels are completely different size, as are the front wing endplates. As are the drivers helmets. Looks like they cut and paste this.

EDIT: I see others got there first!

It's obvious that the AMUS image is a merge of two different photos taken at different distances.
Is also as obvious that wheels and helmets size are not the same between the two photos, hence the wheelbase comparison is just wrong.

Same distance, check wheels with a piece of paper on the screen. It's perspective that makes Ferrari looks bigger

edit: doesn't the 2nd Merc looks bigger ?

yes that is the same illusion you get when you arrange 3 same sized cars side by side on street

All the 3 cars are of the same size, you can check it in Photoshop!

You decide for yourself. Haven't altered any car's length. Just interchanged the position, tarmac is placed. that's it.

So we established it's optical illusion and the cars are of equal size. Moving on.

Yep, that's absolutely true! I was perfectly aware of this visual effect, but it deceived me anyway...that's amazing!

In the end, we all agree that this wheelbase comparison is totally wrong, let's move on.

Nice comparison. Ferrari's front wheel centre line is further from the front bulkhead it seems.
