The distribution of wealth in F1 needs to change to be fairer so that teams dont have to rely on money from mediocre rich drivers just to survive.

I do sympathise with Sauber, but you cant just have companies stealing money from investors and customers just because they think they can do better later on. They made their choice and were legally bound by it.

It should not even need to go the the FIA! Sauber as a team should have delt with it.

Just shows how complacent & incompetent Sauber management are! Surely their team lawyers should have spotted this as well, its a joke.

And personally I dont even agree with that. Sports do far to much 'internal' stuff, much of which is dubious legally and completely non-transparent already.

I have to take issue with comments that say courts shouldn't force a team to pick a driver, or stop a driver being dropped. That is misunderstands what is happening.

The courts are implementing the terms & conditions Sauber wrote in their contract. If Sauber don't like those terms then they only have themselves to blame for signing a contract that they later regretted. In particular it appears the contract does not have appropriate termination clauses to allow Sauber to drop VDG. Don't blame the court, blame the person who wrote the contract.

There is the issue of compensation in lieu of racing, just like most of us would get if a customer cancelled an order. The problem is that F1 is unique, it's not as if VDG can sell his services to another F1 race somewhere else.

An analogy could be the sponsoring the Olympics. Lets say the IOC sell unique beverage rights to Pepsi, but for some reason the same slot is also sold to Coke. It would not make sense to refund the fees to Pepsi plus the manufacturing cost of the merchandising. Pepsi would say they've lost a unique opportunity, they would also seek to stop an competitor taking advantage. The courts would enforce that (assuming no termination clauses in the contract). No one would say the courts are choosing what you drink at the Olympics, just like the courts are not choosing who drives for Sauber. They're simply implementing the rules agreed by VDG and Sauber.

I love F1 and I understand that in the long run the sport needs many healthy teams. As an F1 fan I am not really concerned by whether a dishonest team continues to exist in the short term or whether they go into administration for somebody else to buy. This will have little consequence for the state of F1 in 10 or 20 years.

Of course his pass won't work, he's not on the Sauber's list of accredited team members.

I am new here and haven't lurked (which maybe I should have), so I have to ask. Is this you as a poster or a mod?

I love that the drivers seem to be well and truly behind him (with the possible exception of 2..).
