I have a feeling they're going to gain around 1 to 1.25 seconds just from getting the harvesting and deployment sorted. The rest needs to come from the chassis, and ICE power, but history teaches us that chassis gains are around .5 seconds if at all, from season to season. I think McLaren will be next year where Ferrari was at the beginning of this year, I think next year's McLaren will be fighting at the top of the mid-field occasionally fighting for podiums, they may even develop the car and catch up next year. This engine formula is annoying in that sense, that what you've made, you're stuck with, so even if you've solved many problems on the power unit, your hands are tied, and you don't improve because you can't just change power unit layout until next year.

I got to roam around the track yesterday during FP3 and IMO after seeing the car on the track, this chassis is not good. Both Fernando and Jensen are really fighting the car through the "S curves" and "Casino Triangle". The car is all over the place compared to RB and Ferrari. It does not seem planted at all. We all know the Honda PU is way down on power but the chassis definitely needs to be revamped. IMO, I would venture to say it is inferior to all teams except Manor.

Actually, I don't think this chassis is worse than last year MP4-29, neither the MP4-28.
I just think it was unfortunate for the team to push for such a dramatic change when the engine is just not up to par. It makes things very hard to develop, as you have the team constantly chasing problems, and with that I assume all things related to traction or set up work get compromised. No wonder Alonso says that it still feels like winter testing.

0.4 sec in the qualification to the cars powered by Mercedes engine can not be done with inferior chassis.

Thoy should have adapted the mp4-27 chassis. Now that was the best macca chassis in these aero regs from 2009. The intriguing thing about that chassis designed by paddy lowe.. Is that no one at mclaren knew why it was so fast! They simply couldn't take the best bits of it because they dont know what the best bits were! Lol.. I think they would have understood it if they had carried thru to 2013.

The other works teams are 0.75-1.00 ahead in sector 1 alone.

We don't talk about them. Clearly McLaren-Honda are not behind all client teams except Williams maybe but I am not sure for them either. All other teams have huge power advantage in the qualifications. The difference between 2.1 sec with Mercedes and 0.4 sec with the Mercedes client teams can only be attributed to the chassis. Compensating 1.7 sec on chassis alone is not so bad I think.

The works Mercedes are running the new spec engine, their customers are not.

They will when they take their 4th power unit, so for Russia or Austin.

I don't understand how the Renault cars get past the Mclarens so easily despite the Mclarens being faster on the speedtraps?
This is so embarrassing, Come on Honda give us a monster engine!

I couldn't understand what Alonso said. I thought he was saying "cheeky" but that made no sense. Yes GP2 is about right. Honda and the Mclaren team are letting both drivers down.

I think he said GP2 engine so being critical to Honda's PU directly. It's what people thought on Twitter as well.

also he screamed loud at the end too after shouting GP2 engine. i guess its the right present to honda at their home GP. Boulier face was telling the shame they feel at the moment no one at the pitwall said anything or matched the eye with each other.i hope Honda ignites their pride and do some justice to the talent they have at their disposal.
