As long as the issues are obvious and easily fixable in the off-season (but neigh-impossible to fix during the season), one can suddenly find Mclaren fighting consistently for points and perhaps even podium places.

But please, let's not turn this into a mclaren topic! As always, don't follow the example of your misbehaving dicta... er moderator.
very possible.... what scares me with Honda is their reliabilty problems ....
Under the current rules the dominant strategy is to make a fast engine, not a reliable one. Unreliability is unacceptable for the sport, a slower engine isn't, but it'll be unacceptable for your team you can't win.

Who says 1.5? You're saying they were 1.0 s behind at the end of last year?
they remained on average 0.6 seconds a lap slower than the champions in qualifying
http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/35218416

I can't find the article now, but others have said the same quali gap with only 0.2 s in the race.
0.2sec is just not true on the average track. Maybe in Malaysia. But Merc was 95% sandbagging through the season. We saw the pace for example in Mexico or Monza when they were unleashing the power on a car without technical problems. There it was nearly a second.

The 0.5 sec claim is also not a claim, but what the top team gained in the last years. RedBull showed it, Merc showed it.
enough with the sandbagging nonsense....
the top teams in the last years have absolutely nothing to do with 2016....
its always the same nonsense from Merc fans ... Merc loses a race-its not their fault its the tires or some other creative excuse Ferrari challenges merc in a race- merc were sandbagging ... sure you want to list Monza as mercedes unleashing their car when they started the race with underinflated tires relative to the rest of the field? think that was a performance gain?
Mexican GP was unleashing the power of the car? Vettel having a puncture on the first lap then later wrecking and kimi starting 19th have anything to do with this supposed unleashing?
Yes the merc was faster in 2015 and should be ahead in 2016 . no need to try to pump them up with suspect logic

All we know at this point is that ferrari reconfigured their engine to shrink their rear end to produce more downforce..that alone in theory should wipe out most of the aero deficit they had to Mercedes....now remains to be seen which team improved their Pu more keeping in mind that conventional wisdoms says ferrari has more room for improvement... we shall soon find out though

for the love of god man get your math right, .5tenths is not the same thing as 0.5 seconds.
lol 5 tenths half second ... whatever!....its a made up guess is what my point is. Ferrari were 3 tenths a lap slower than the silver arrows during the race and about 6 tenths slower in quali.
Mercedes did not become dominant with some trick double diffuser or some trick exhaust blowing software, they dominated with a powerfull engine and chassis optimized for that engine when everybody else got it wrong....
the team with the resources to make it right happens to be the team that was closest last year...all we know is that Ferrari will have a slimmer rear end which should claw back some of the deficit that mercedes had in that area in 2015
should be a very interesting first couple races this year....NOBODY knows is my key point so the 1.5 seconds claim is junk along with the .5 second claim
I think 5 tenths is a reasonable jump. '14 to '15 was 5 tenths up to mid season for Mercedes. Thereafter they switched suspensions after Monza and dialed back the engine.

That's because it was an auto pilot re-pass of much slower car after losing time behind it (and losing the race for the third time, Q and start the first two, rest of the race fourth). The one worth talking about is Sainz on Vettel and Toro Rosso in front of two Ferraris. After replays:

- unless Rosberg's switch made track not wide enough to fit a bad overtaking attempt it didn't cause any crashes. Hamilton knows he messed up, there were 5 pairs of cars with speed difference during first laps. Slightly slower car doesn't make a stupid crash OK, cheapest excuse ever.
- Hamilton had a good start, Rosberg's move was simply better
- again: Vettel made mistakes during first corners, Raikkonen went backwards at the start (must be the super clutch), the rest as usual, Sainz #-o .
- Coulthard is even worse than Brundle. In PPV age anything but blind fanaticism is considered a treason and commentators have to adjust. "You're not allowed to close people down in a braking zone" A. didn't happen B. One defensive move is perfectly fine if you're in front and that's what Rosberg did. LH behind and not close enough. Not enough space/talent for a clean move either. C. You want to see pushing off in the braking zone watch - Ham-Raikk Ger '14. Textbook and no penalty.

Rosberg won already Monaco three times in a row so who's the new Senna now huh !?! He won 7 races in a row and would have won the eighth if his spiteful team mate didn't take him in a boneheaded move, stole 7 points and possibly more by avoiding a penalty through preferential treatment. I moved to the next race as requested :-).

- crashed in FP3
- crashed in Q
- crashed in the race

That's just about records number of 3 crashes driving the best car at this track and with limited competition: Rosberg (race only), Ferrari (overall). 0/10. I also somehow think it's more important than 0,2 s gap in Barcelona practice.
He really failed to cover himself in glory, Monaco is a drivers circuit and the only 2 redbull drivers to acquit themselves well were Ricciardo and Sainz, Kyvatt and Verstappen both had shockers of their own making.

And in both cases the teams failed. Ricciardo should have won and Sainz was able to be between 3-5.

Turns into Maldonado overnight: Winning in Spain and after that crashing multiple times in Monaco. :?

Another strong qualifying from Ricciardo, even if he didn't make poll.

Same with Max. Very happy with his development thus far as a RBR driver.

...
At the end of the day, Max is driving the Red Bull this- and next year.. so suck it up.
Well, it was really stupid...he had one job with the mighty RedBull in Monaco: Keep the car on track for Q1, Q2 and first hot lap in Q3. Then he could have tried whatever he wanted and crash the car.
The same for the race...he was on the final stint, already in the points. There was no other job than driving this car home.

This stupid driving is, of course, emphasized: By being the non-Oz driver at the most evil team he is the most evil for some people here...

I really think he did a good job after Monaco: Keep his mouth shut and do a well Q in Canada without taking too much risk. What he needs is a clear race without crashing, but I guess Marco and his father already told him that quite clear.

Just see him as a rough diamond that needs to be cut.. the boy is still very young, so there is plenty to learn, but fortunately the talent and rough speed is already there.

Every driver sometimes makes a stupid mistake, but lets be honest.. it is more likely to happen to somebody that is 18.. than someone that is 25 etc.

Laugh it up while you can, as I fully expect Nico to end up where he belongs at the end of the season, #2!
