In that photo it almost looks like it fades from dark blue to black...

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

As I thought, it has a blue hue to it.

Anyone? The point is obviously to make the car as slippery as possible, doesn't matte finish give more drag?
No
I've given a quick explanation about matte /gloss paint finishes and areo. in the fantasy liveries tread

And thanks to Scarbs tweet https://twitter.com/ScarbsF1/status/700031796214423552
confirming what I had thought.

About the colour. The colour of paint will look differently to the eye depending on what gloss level has been used
this is a chart that I used to show the effect of gloss on colour to my customers back in the day

I think it's really difficult to say how blue the car actually is at this point. As mentioned before, the room has a lot of blue lights which can cause the car to look more blue than it actually is. Plus, you have no idea if the photos taken have the correct white balance settings or if they were edited in any way.

This image (left) makes the car look black. https://twitter.com/ScarbsF1/status/700011016718053380 Whereas this one looks blue.

I think we will have to wait for more photos taken in neutral lighting.

Don't know about you guys but I think it looks great. I've been pandering for a mate finish on an F1 car for a while now!

If you use a known colour reference point (Total Red on the RW) to weed out the photo's with poor colour accuracy, it becomes very obvious that the colour is a very very dark blue.

Color-corrected image. For context, the top half of the sidepod turning vane is dark blue; the lower half is black.

Red Bull said the colour was Royal Blue, which is a very dark colour,
Add to that the use of a matte finish and that makes it look even darker
you can see the difference that the flat finish makes on the colour, in the photo I showed earlier
all of the blue colours on that chart are the same blue, it's just the difference in gloss

This is not just a personal view, I spent over 20 yrs in the coatings ( paint ) industry

I must say I do like it, though I would have used a gloss finish for the Bull on the engine cover

It looks that way because the is light shinning on that area,
as you can see in this photo there is no difference in colour on the turning vane

I'm a huge fan of matte paint jobs, so I like it a lot.

Nope. Still two colors.

Now, here are two observations: this is the quintessential F1T conversation, and some of y'all need to schedule an appointment with an optometrist.

We each have our opinion on what that colour is in that area. that's ok
like I said much earlier it will look different when viewed outside under natural light,
and I'm willing to wait till then, to see if I'm correct or wrong about that.
