At first I thought they had to remain on track but I think this is incorrect. I guess we will have to wait for the full rules to be sure.
Once they set a time they can sit in the garage, the only difference is that after a certain time if they have the slowest time they are knocked out rather than being able to set another time. We're going to see a lot less action than how it is currently.

So some drivers definatly won't stay in the garage for certain reasons

In the end Bernie E. wants to make it the way that no driver can be certain not to get knocked out, so I wonder what the final qualifying regs will look like.
Bernie want make sure that every second of the qualifying the TV recipient is glued to the screen and also that the grid result is shaken up.
Lets see what it will be like.

I agree Nevill3. That is how I am expecting it to play out. If they wanted more on track action, maybe they should have given them more tires for the sessions. Everyone is trying to save tires for the race so less laps are made during each session.

That is a good point. More tires simply means more driving, now that they are more or less ok with engine lifetime.

Regarding the new Q format: On dry Q it will be not different to the past. The Q3 teams set a fast lap at the beginning of Q1 and stay in the garage. In Q2 most teams run twice, the same like last year, maybe the second run a bit earlier. Maybe the teams which are fighting for Q3 may run once more, but the top teams can not afford a third run. So no big changes...I do not bother as I can not see anything bad with this change.

But I think it will be interesting in the wet. On a drying track no one can afford to stay in the pits, they all need to go out and drive. Maybe this will be the biggest benefit of the change, but we will only see it statistically once per season.

Yeah, because until now they didn't go out when the track began to dry out.

Do some of you even read what you write?

Yes, the Autosport article in the OP said they need to stay out, but nowhere else does it say this, so I think that journalist was smoking something and playing too much Need for Speed.

More tires would only be useful if the gearboxes and PU's weren't so limited.

Why not just have normal qualifying but then the drivers throw a couple of dices and add that amount of tenths to their time? If they want to add randomness, do it openly.

I dont see how they would run less than they did before. Also now they are only doing the laps they have to do to advance to the next round. It wont change too much...

Because for many the sessions aren't as long as they were before.

Until the rules are published we can't be sure that they don't have to keep running for the whole session....but I doubt it due to the tyre situation...
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

It would force drivers to improve every lap though. But that's only in drying conditions because the track improves very fast. In every other situation it makes qualifying more predictable.

which is nearly impossible with the Pirrelli tires.

Re: New qualifying format...

is it not true that the new qualifications need a unanimous vote by the teams before it is implimented? i doubt there will be a unanimous vote.
fromMotorsports.com:
It was therefore significant that at the very bottom of the FIA release, it said: "The wording of the Sporting Regulations relating to this new qualifying format will be submitted to the F1 Strategy Group and F1 Commission."

This means that, for F1's governance procedures to have been followed to the word, the regulations relating to qualifying must go back to the teams, and will only get approved if there is unanimous support.
