Not really - you can make here comparison with the Torro drivers who went to mediums at the same time like Button did, and you will see that Button has outperformed them (except the time when he was behind Nasr):

I think that the temperature of the track and weight of the cars made SS very slow for some reason for McLaren only. The team made wrong call with the strategies of both drivers.
It is misleading to use the Torro Rossos as a yardstick. They were held up behind Hulkenburg. Look at Verstappen's laps and you see that when he was in free air after his spin he was a lot quicker. 4 seconds in 2 laps.
Pay attention to the laps when both Torro Rossos passed Hulkenburg, and Button passed Nasr.

The question is do McLaren have the right people and personnel in place to mount a serious comeback. I think we have to expect more of them this season compared to 2015, the chassis lack's innovation when you compare it to the like's of Mercedes. I am not writing them off after one race but it's one think saying you have a car with pace, quite the other to pull of a decent weekend scoring point's.

Mclaren have showed signs of innovation in previous season to no avail and they get slammed for that, now they follow the pack on design and they get talked down about too.

I'm not attacking you btw, just playing devils advocate.

I think you're overreacting, looks like normal race pace behaviour to me. He's just eeking out his tyres. On a more positive note from that onboard is the steering actions, pretty smooth with no dramas. Sign of a decent chassis to build upon.

He's managing, he's not pushing, that seems obvious, but why not? If you can't overtake, try another strategy, manage the gap, tires, fuel. That's also a reality.

So is the chassis now the weakest link? If Red Bull is close to challenging Ferrari with a Renault PU, surely the Mclaren chassis needs some work?

Well it seems that the rear needs some work but we should wait 2 races to see the real level of this car.

What exactly is the Mercedes chassis innovation you speak of? The colour scheme? No 44 painted on the nose?
But yes, with that username, if Manor had no44 on the nose, you would probably consider them the most "innovative"

Rear needs work and the Aero balance needs to be fixed.

Looks like the new suspension design is giving them headaches at the moment and the Aero isn't doing what it should(that would explain why so much aero redesign so soon in the season!).

They are suppose to get new Aero at the next race so hopefully that helps but can they fix the suspension in a short time span?
