Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Currently, but it´s next season when the deal would be effective and I don´t think Honda will be the worst available PU next season

Add to that it will be one of the most affordable if not the cheapest, so I see it as a risky but very reasonable strategy for a midfileder.

Honda has been approached by several teams and is - along with Ron Dennis - in discussion about providing another team with a PU next year?!
Could be Torro Rosso given that they will continue to get a year old engine from Ferrari. The other teams could be Sauber and Force India, if Honda was to offer them engine at a lower price
Nah, they only got a year old Ferrari engine because Ferrari just didn't have enough on schedule to give them. I think in 2017 if their still doing business with one another, it will be a 2017 unit.

I think Sauber is the one to get the Honda engine. They are good enough for steady data collection, but not a threat to McLaren like Toro Ross is. And besides, Big Ron doesn't like his girls... err.. i mean customer teams, too feisty

I also expect Toro Rosso to stay with Ferrari units in 2017. The question around Sauber is .. will they be in F1 next year? I doubt it.

If they get Honda engines on the cheap and a driver bankrolled by Honda or McLaren (vandorne most likely candidate) then it will help their chances significantly.

They can also probably work up a Ferrari-HAAS type relationship where sauber gets most of its parts outsourced to McLaren. HAAS is so far showing that this type of relationship can be beneficial to both parties. Saves Sauber money on designing all the small parts and maybe gives McLaren a development boost.

Note that all I am saying here has not been reported here by anybody (at least that I know of). I'm just presenting an interesting scenario that has played out in my head.

Sauber finished last year in front of McLaren, and this year they are just a bit behind. All of that because of the engine alone. If they had an Honda engine with that terrible chassis, even with a major McLaren cooperation they would sunk way behind the Manors. With 11 teams that is a big risk to take in terms of payment. I think they should avoid that risk, even if possibly the Honda engine will be better next year, that is no guarantee. Also having Vandoorne would be a great improvement in lap times but they would lose big money coming from a pay driver, unless they hire all three.

Mods

Pls remove all these engine silly season speculation from this thread. Has no bearing on the technical discussion of the Honda Power unit.

The Honda engine is going to surprise people before the end of the year. It's not at all like last year.

Dead serious

A.)They have far more components sorted out than last year
B.) They have almost twice as many tokens to spend developing the PU this year
C.)They're not pursuing reliability as much as last year, and focusing more on performance
D.)It's Honda, they've been building engines nearly 3x as long as I've been alive.

Will they be setting pole in Sochi, no, not a chance in hell. Will they have a car that surpasses the Williams by Singapore, I believe so, they will slot behind Red Bull by the end of the year, next year there won't be any more token nonsense so they will really begin to make strides.

I have to admit, there was no getting around the deployment issue last year.

There wasn't enough tokens to fix it.

They were dead in the water.

and do you have first hand information for your comments or is your assumption after the first 3 GP of this year?

the real fact right now is that Honda is a lot better prepared than last year, and most of the problems are fixed or almost there to have a reliable unit with reasonable performance.

For all the reasons you listed, it shouldn't come as a surprise that eventually Honda will catch up. The real question is about timeline. I do agree with your assessment though. At the end of the year they (Mclaren-Honda) should surpass Williams.
