an increased overall length is the inevitable consequence of the cumulative effects of the new rules (delta front wing, bigger tires, increased fuel tanks, modified back/diffuser).
An increased wheelbase seems more a common (but not obliged) choiche by the designers

I want to see hi-res pics of the bargeboard area and cooling inlets. They did some funky stuff there. Most likely to reduce drag.

I think these floor leading-edge extensions (should we call them FLEXs?) will be producing some downforce in their own right.

It is, but then again it is not bigger than it needs to be. The reason why we are seeing this is increased horsepower from the PU requiring more air to be fed, while the rear wing is now lowered and thus less obstructed by a larger airbox/roll hoop.

It was pretty obvious this was going to happen given the extra blockage generated from the rear tyres.

I don't think so. They just moved the cooling intakes up, right next to the engine intake. Instead of underneath the engine intake as of previous years.
I think they do this because of the lowered rear wing, making for a cleaner airflow/more air to the rear wing.

The rear end of the car looks very similar to the Mclaren MP4-29.

From that angle, it's true. But the sidepods on the RS17 aren't as bulky as the McLaren's

I would not interpret too much into these computer images...
real deal looks slightly different in details
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Well someone had Fun designing that Bargeboard / Sidepod Turning Vane Area. 8)

That Roll Hoop/Air Intake looks great. (actually the whole Car looks great from the Front)

Looks quite a bit more agressive than the Sauber. Good to see some decnet Diffusor shots too. This Years Cars look great from behind.

Is it me or does that Shark Fin raise a bitfrom Front to Back? Guess it is because the Air Intake is quite low?

From the top they are similar, from the back the Mclaren's "cannons" were much bulkier, the Renault ones are pointed down to not disturb airflow as much.
