Mercedes W08 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

How'd you work that out? I'm not doubting you, the thing looks massive. Just wondering.
raiin tyres 680mm
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Oh, okay, you've tried to do it from the photos. That's not going to really be accurate at all, the lens distorts size etc far too much for it to be anything like accurate.

A quick Photoshop scaling of the over head shot

Car is little over 8 wheels long, a wheel being 670mm

Wheelbase is 5.5 wheels long

Stepped floor near the tire squirt slots or a light trick? To further feed the brake duct winglets and to divert air away from the tire?

It looks like they have dropped the single-lever lower front wishbone design?

Are they wet tyres or 'demo'/academy tyres? Not that it makes much difference given the margin of error I guess.

I'm interested to see how much different the car is next week. Would expect a new front wing, floor, etc. Also, is it possible for them to put the luminescent paint on? It looks like the same pattern as the pictures from the other day, but seems like some trouble to go through for no performance gain. And while the suspension isn't the classic Aldo Costa-spec, maybe they've gone down an even crazier route with mk2...

See my previous comment. No way of telling from the photos as size is distorted by lens.

Look at this.

If you took the size of his eye as a means of working out the size of his face, you would have a different size of face with every different lens/distance used.

[pause for breath]

Certainly is a limousine though; you wonder if - even if the long wheelbase is the way to go for the most part - they might struggle getting it turned around Monaco. In 2007 Ferrari had the (generally) fastest car but with a longer wheelbase than McLaren and were thoroughly smoked there.

Edit: You've got to imagine there's more coming to the floor ahead of the rear wheels, right? Other than tyre squirt slots, seems quite bare.
Well, actually, I'm wondering now...

I think this long wheelbase should be great for the whole race calendar, but I suppose a shorter wheelbase version could come in order just for Monaco (and maybe other streetcircuits) perhaps? Back in 2013 Lotus came with a shorter wheelbase version of the E21, which suited Kimi.

Who designed that E21? James Allison.

Question is, how much of this longer wheelbase is due to what's happening under that bonnet behind the driver. Is it really necessary, because of packaging or is it purely because on how the aero works on the car and ride characteristics.

What I'm asking is, can this package be fitted on a wheelbased car just like the W06?
