Williams FW40 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's definately not a reflection as it's been in the exact same spot from multiple photo angles over the past couple of days.

Are you sure those photos aren't all taken as the Williams is leaving the garage; it looks to me like it could be a reflection from the gear that is holding up the pressure wires for pitstops, but I haven't looked very closely, I admit.

It's on the photo's of it going down the pitlane and on the track too. Maybe there's pitcrew running down the side of the track with some refueling gear REALLY REALLY fast?

Not visible here, though.

I think it is the reflection of the T-wing

I did see what you mean, though. I too see images where this area is visible, however, they all have a thing in common; They are all taken from the same angle. If you take an image from the side, or from the top, even the back, and the area isn't present anymore.

Iv`e grabbed a shot from behind (slightly skewed), take a look, it does look thicker above the roll hoop, if it were just a flat fin you wouldn`t get this surely...
Anyway nothing to argue about, hopefully someone can run their hand down the side of the fin :)

If anything it confirms it is a shadow, it's shaded area is both bigger as well as less dense than the other pic.

And more important to note; The airbox itself lacks any shaping, if there was a chimney there, it would be visible on the back of the airbox, the airbox is clearly form fitted and the fin is close to perpendicular to the back of the airbox. If there was a chimney there it's back profile would merge into the fin smoothly.

Nice comparison. The actual rear exit on the williams looks smaller than the Ferrari. Williams must have bigger radiators and that's why they have the bigger "waist".

Of course it's a shadow, because the surface is changing shape #-o
