I doubt Alonso is going to continue for the whole season, and somehow I don't think Button is coming back either. I'd say after race 4 (Spain) if McLaren aren't challenging for podiums Alonso will be out the door.

Nah he is not quitting mid season. That will be a career suicide.

Well yeah, exactly, if he leaves McLaren he leaves F1, he has already stated that. The only reason Button was given an option is an insurance policy for if/when Alonso leaves.

He quit after the season was over not mid-season. Alonso is no Nico. The comparison is not the same.

McLaren should definitley be looking at other options to replace Honda, always good to have options. I wonder if McLaren had any other options apart from Mercedes and Honda.

What I´d say is RBR has been trying to fight Mercedes as hard as even trying a PU re-brand (Tag-heuer) with new developers to improve the PU further than the actual manufacturer was able to, and while failing, Ferrari has been fighting RBR, wich they only managed to do the season where RBR PU was heavily underpowered

Last year Renault had a better PU and still was Ferrari slightly ahead of RB. Sadly the Scuderia failed to improve the car properly so it was finally beaten by them.

This is not about how things start, but about how the WCC and WDC finish after last GP. Last season RBR beated Ferrari.... again.

During Schumacher´s years the scuderia became the top 1 because of a constant evolution and improvement during 3-4 seasons.

During Schumacher era FIArrari enjoyed a private track where they were constantly testing their F1 cars 24/7 to check and develop new solutions. That surely did help at some extent

But since testing was banned, Ferrari has never been that team again

Its not the same when you initially have a better car and due to a poor in-season development you are beaten than when you actually have a worse car. Ferrari should have beaten RB in 2016 but their bad strategies+poor development ruined their chances.

Ferrari always had Fiorano to check their cars, not only between 2000 and 2005, there were more reasons to explain the team´s dominance.

Now that(theoretically) Ferrari has an updated wind tunnel they should do a better job, they..."should". [-o<
