Why risk race and quali prep when they have a comfortable 2 Days of Testing just around the Corner to test every aspect of the new PU Spec?

1 Car do race and quali prep & the other testing as we are still in testing faze for all practical purposes.

Otherwise we have 2 days of sitting in the garage again like in Spain. FP's we have 2 cars but testing only 1

Edit: We are so slow at the moment and therefore must focus more on the upgraded PU

1 the Honda team limits the laps in the FP.
2 have nothing to lose, fighting for a point or two is not McHonda's objetive.
3 this championship should use it as final test to attack in the next.
4 if they try the new engine and it works, could this same GP take a good step forward.
I would rather not end up as they struggle in Bahrain for the 5/6 post to end up being 9/10/11 or 12.
If I were a sponsor of McHonda I would prefer (this year) not finish races but see a constant evolution and fighting near the podium to finish GP 9,10,11 or 12.

And that's exactly what they are doing.Testing the new PU thoroughly on 2 whole Days rather than sacrificing 3 hours Qualy and Race prep on Friday. Like Zak said already, their Sponsors want to see results.
I would agree with testing the new PU on Friday on most other Weekends, but with an In Season Test right after the Race there is really no Point in it.

Other than that Honda may not even have the new Spec ready for this Weekend.

Alonso will skip the Monaco GP to race the Indy 500!

McLaren returns to Indianapolis for this year's Indy 500

After an absence of 38 years, McLaren is to return to the Indianapolis 500 next month, using Honda engines.

On May 28th 2017 McLaren will enter a single car in the 101st Indianapolis 500, powered by Honda. The car will be run by the Andretti Autosport team, headed by founder, owner and Chief Executive Officer Michael Andretti, a former IndyCar champion who raced in Formula 1 for McLaren alongside the legendary Ayrton Senna for a single season (1993) and is the son of three-time IndyCar champion and one-time Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti.

The McLaren-Honda-Andretti entry, a Dallara DW12 chassis as used by all IndyCar teams, will be driven by current McLaren-Honda Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, who has started 275 Grands Prix, has won 32 of those races, has become Formula 1 world champion twice, and has been Formula 1 runner-up three times.

Its engine will be a Honda 2.2-litre twin-turbo V6, limited by IndyCar regulations to 12,000rpm.

Since the Indianapolis 500 will take place on May 28th, the same day as the Monaco Grand Prix, Fernando will not race at Monaco this year. The Indianapolis 500 will be the only 2017 IndyCar race in which Fernando will compete, however, and the Monaco Grand Prix will therefore be the only 2017 Formula 1 race in which he will not compete.

In due course McLaren-Honda will announce the identity of the driver who will race Fernando’s car at Monaco.

Just wanted to post that. Super odd, but on the other side with the Performance of the Car at the Moment there is not much lost.

Edit: So Jenson will Race in Monaco? That would be cool.

That's really odd because Monaco is probably where McLaren current package can score most points, they should have sent Button

It's not. Even Wikipedia have updated the Indycar page. Check teams and drivers:

Why worried? It's good publicity for McLaren in America, Fernando is kept happy and McLaren isn't in the run for the Championship anyways.

Plus we maybe get a Monaco Farewell Race for Jenson. =D>

Same, literally.
- Get this walking mid-life crisis out of F1 ;-). As if constant back-patting himself on the radio wasn't enough.
- I though he said he could drive until 50, so why hurry now? I hope he doesn't hurt someone else. Shame on McL for allowing it.

- the problem with Alonso is that he really thought that his spontaneous aka prepared GP2 engine outburst at Japanese GP and some management changes would make their engine better and prove him right.

Maybe also Liberty Media supporting as well with the idea of bringing F1 closer to the States and Indycar?

Perhaps for 2018 the calendar might shift so drivers can get the chance to participate in venues like 24h of Le Mans or Indy 500. Back to the old days where F1 drivers also participate in other racing categories. I think Liberty Media can do that.
