The layout was convenient from a packaging viewpoint, & the piston, cam, ports & valves don't care..

Regarding cross flow, routing air and exhausts through and back out the same side of the engine is just inefficient for several reasons.
For starters, your incoming air is getting heated up by the exhausts costing power and efficiency.
