I think they are fully focusing on the new spec engine, but when they discover ideas that will work on the current engine, they transfer it across. Just how different the new engine is, I don't know, but you wouldn't be mad to assume that the current spec won't be able to handle certain upgrades due to fundamental flaws and a difference in architecture.

But if they introduce the new spec and it doesn't show massive improvement, well then you can imagine the s**tstorm that will follow.

What concerns me most is that they can't get a handle on the MGU-H and I don't know if a new engine will alleviate that issue, but maybe it will alleviate things.
Yeah it's always the same thing "wait for the next upgrade" lalala, it gets old after 3 years!
It's not a ignorant statement trust me. It's reality. 3 years have passed, I was also a believer at the beginning. I wanted to believe Honda could succeed and fight it out with the best but things change and in my opinion anyone with that view now is in denial.
Nobody can deny three years has passed with poor progress, and your thoughts are understandable. But you were talking about this years progress and the response was regarding the same, not the past three years. So yes, it's fair to say it is a bit ignorant.

I hope they can do it. And i respect your call to not believe, if that is what you think. But I won't say you shouldn't be disappointing and not believe in them, nor do I understand why you'd do some silly mocking tone if I choose to. It's just a sport, don't take it so personal.
I still don't see how it's ignorant. If you want to look at this year alone it's still the same story.. poor reliability and poor power. I don't want to be a negative nancy but you have to look at the real facts instead of dreams of grandeur.

Lol and to your "it's just a sport" comment I don't know what to say except people put billions into this "just a sport" so I think it matters to them a great deal more than to some of us.

Continuing with the speculation and bring some positivism, spanish media reported yesterday that Alo run spec 2 for the free practice and only today for the quali will run the spec 3 or 2.5
This weekend it's all Spec 3. Alonso took a penalty for battery replacement on Fri then decided to put another engine/mgu-h etc in the bank by using it Sat/Sun. So Alonso has two Spec 3's at the moment.

McLaren/Honda looking to next race whereby they have been strong.
I am refering to this article of Marca where they state that yesterday was spec 2 only batteries were changed and today Alo will take the 25 position penalty changing to spec 3. So if true it means times yesterday were made with a spec 2 with new batteries but today will run an engine with new Ice, Mgu-H and Mgu-K, the mention is at the end of the article http://www.marca.com/motor/formula1/gp- ... b45a0.html
I think that's only article I've seen refering to Spec 2 for Silverstone. This is clearest one for me.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/alon ... ne-930062/

"For Silverstone, he will go back to the Spec 3 engine that was used on the Friday in Austria, but with the old MGU-H that he ran from final practice at the Red Bull Ring.

A new energy store will also be fitted. As that will be his fifth of the season, he will incur a five-place grid penalty for Sunday's grand prix."

Honda then replaced the whole lot, all new Spec 3 for Alonso on Saturday so he has two which will be used for Hungary, a track they expect to do well at.

I did state I still enjoy seeing them pushing for 8th. It's not grandeur, I just accept that it is the way it is and I hope that Honda can pull it out of the bag.

Nor did I invest billions so that doesn't really affect me. I'm here for the show and I like it when Mclaren progress. They have done so, albeit very slowly. I'm not even sure Honda would have put a plural number of billions into this project yet! Anyways, this is silly so it's conversation over for me.

still a spec 2 or a spec 3 with and old MGU-H, alo was on top 10 so today with the whole new spec 3 maybe he improves that it would be positive

It's a spec 3 with an old MGU-H. And the new MGU-H spec is just a reliability development really and not an enhancement.

If it took them about 6 months to find 10bhp and still not very reliable you think they could find way more in a 3rd of the time? Lol
Come on man. Do it fair. You are reading Honda PU thread and I am sure you know that Honda have been working on it since early times of this season, wazari san said that this is part of general update and he couldn't understand why this are intruduced. So you can't say that 6 months 10 hp and 3rd of it good step forward. real spec 3, real update is what we still waiting and it won't be just 2 months work. And you already know this. Just making negative comments.
If you actually believe wazari worked for Honda then what he is saying now has no relevance simce he said he quite around the time we found out this years engine was a dud. Sorry I'm not praising Honda I'm just being reaslistic if you can't handle it then #notsorry

The specification of the Alonso 3 engine suffered damage when the gearbox was broken. I post the news in the engine forum.
It is very likely that Alonso ran with specification 2

I think on Q2 they told him to slow down not to put Van out of top 10 as Alo has the penalty

So, the first time this year that Vandoorne outqualified Alonso. A good sign! Since the last race he is considerably closer to Alonso in practices and qualifying. Let's hope he can find that little extra bit in the race. Sometimes I miss that real fighting spirit in the race. It seems so calculated when sometimes you just have to go and (try to) take that place. It's the eagerness that for instance Hamilton and Alonso do have.

He had traffic. In hindsight its maybe a good thing. They have a real shot of points here it seems, their long run pace yesterday seemed decent; so I think the Honda update has given them a small step.

Their S2 times are very competitive. The chassis in the high speed looks great.
