I've been working on Hondas for a while now. I don't hate McLaren, I just think it's a bad move, that's all. You didn't answer my question, what kind of improvement would the 2017 Renault engine have on the 2017 McLaren chassis? It would have to give them over a second per lap to be within reach of Red Bull, and lets face it, the Renault PU is not 1 second per lap faster than the Honda PU. If you think it is I'm not the delusional one.

And we aren't even talking about setup comprises. McLaren knows exactly what they are doing. This isn't some customer engine. McLaren will receive works maps, BP develops fuel for 2 teams, assistance from McLaren on energy systems, it's just a great deal for all parties involved even for Honda.

Very dumb questions, are they switching now or the rest of the season will be with Honda?

mercedes
ferrari less 10-15hp
mercedes cus. 20-25hp
renault 35-40hp
honda 90-100hp

10hp its 0.15-0.25+sec lap time

mclaren with renault only with the 60hp more can win 1-1.5sec ..+ better tyre work and aero +alonso can hit his limits..
i think mcl32 can be with redbull and fight for podium with renault engine.....next year if renault close the half gap mclaren with chassis progres can be title contender

Probably a good move for both if true. It will save Honda about $160 million not including the free PU's. It will be interesting if anyone steps up to cover that gap or if McLaren is going to run a much leaner budget compared to this year.

Well we won't see the Spec 4 PU this year...........
I agree, is the best for both since the beginning Honda and McLaren had same objective, different time to achieve it, before Honda, Mclaren was never a real contender for the championship for the last 6 or 7, they want instant success and tough that Honda was their silver bullet to get that, Honda, instead, was more on the long run, more of learning new technologies (all other 3 manufactures had previous experience racing MGU-K systems in F1) and wining like their main goal.

In addition to the different time, honda lost like 2 or 3 years of development with their original design, Honda learnt from their mistakes, learn a lot, this P.U only have like 1 year or a little longer, new design, new fuel and lubricant supplier, a lot of new things and 6 months of that time....racing.

At the end I believe next year will be different and probably we will see a McLaren regretting their decision.

We will never know the true deficits until far into the future in new PU formulas. Even the 'informed' press often speculate. We've seen all sorts of numbers thrown around.

You are assuming that McLaren chassis is as good as RB. Nobody knows that, lets see with Honda Pu how good that chassis is. No more excuses, no more complains,

Is it just the power unit or they still make their own --- gearbox which cant handle vibrations ?

I sincerely hope mclaren produce a great chassis next year.
The chassis rules are static it will be a development of the 32.

Not that simple. The move to Renault PU is a bit late . Other top teams have next year cars already under way. MCL33 will need some changes vs MCL32.

Of course it will need some changes, but according to McLaren it's fine.
Asked by motorsport.com how late a team could leave such a decision, Boullier said:“Technically you could change an engine in 12 weeks.

“You can change it anytime before the season up to three months before. If you want to do a base design around an engine, it’s September.”

Still, some (impossible to say how many) tweaks will be necessary. Just as an example, difference in PU´s mass distribution will affect the balance of the car, as will difference in center of gravity. Those problems will have to be adressed, if Mclaren is to produze a great chassis.

In the end, the botton line is this: Red Bull and Renault (team), will evolve their chassis/PU integration. Mclaren will have to catch up.

Lets not forget the 95% corellation ratio McLaren claims to have on aero design and track data. How does Red Bull fair on that matter?

Don't you mean gearbox that causes vibrations?

They had some problems in the winter, but the car looks good now. McLaren and Red Bull get a lot praise in the Autosport.com live blogs the last couple of races.
