In USA they were 2 sec behind the top teams, now they are less than 1 sec behind them. If Honda were 2 sec behind top engines in USA but McLaren chassis were equal to the top cars in USA (there were a lot of speculations about this), now McLaren is 1 sec ahead of RedBull. If not, we should admit that Honda had gained more than 1 sec. Choose what suits you.

if he set a time in Q2 and Q3 he could start p3 .. mclaren-honda always find time in Q2
if this strong performance is due to new setup of the chassis , aero and suspension parts so ain't it fair to say honda PU is more powerful than what we see with mclaren, in other words mclaren hampering the power unit
nope he did 2 flyers with a very close timing if he got a tow in one flying lap well he did the same time without a tow in the second flying lap.zoroastar wrote: ↑28 Oct 2017, 23:38the reason he did so well is that he got a tow from vandorne down the front straight of sector 1. that gave him an extra 4 mph. so actually, that was mclaren trying to HELP the honda power unit. unfortunately it wouldnt have mattered either way, because they are on their zillionth honda pu this season.

i think he even improved in the second flying lap iirc.
in the same sense of STR and RBR running the same PU.. iam just wondering why with a different set up and new parts the car was fast
remember he didn't set time in Q2 Honda give the max power always in Q2 not Q1In this sense I am glad he didn’t get spec 4. Given the same engine spec 3.8 and with new chassis update he got to 1 second behind.
You answered your own question. Given Honda PU is a constant in this race 3.7/3.8 the only thing changed is the chassis update regardless what direction it is 2017/2018 Car. The fact is the car is closer to the top teams which means the aero was holding the Car back.

Again whether Honda can sustain that speed over race distance and the reliability is still a Honda problem. But power over one lap maybe it is not as bad as we thought.
