it's becase saying that and then not fulfilling it would be a great disappointment to the team and the fans and the sponsors. imagine you tell everyone you are going to improve half a second a lap and when it's all said and done you don't improve at all: what does that say? like her highness Principessa said, alonso is being realistic. personally, i listen to alonso's comments while i ignore briatore's; i think briatore is a PR person while alonso is an honest spokesperson. i would much rather alonso (as much a team leader as briatore) say that the team needs to improve dramatically instead of him saying that lingering around in 6th or 7th place is acceptable (despite the oncoming development); the team does not want to be in 6th or 7th place. in other words, alonso's comments are much more motivational than they are negative.

to roland,
you use ron dennis and mclaren as a perfect example of 'the team is more important than the driver,' and that philosophy cost dear ron the world championship in 2005 and 2007; if he chose a number 1 driver in those years he would have won those championships instead of losing them...

lastly, i think alonso does speak well about his team. obviously, his team isn't performing as well as they should, so he has simply been saying that they need to improve. but over the entire offseason, and when asked about his feelings toward the team, there is always a positive comment.

anyway, just my opinion :?

three weeks between GP's is way too long!!
I didnt say that he had to make any COMMITMENTS (unlike the 6 tenths that he declared was his at McLaren).

Just saying that he is OPTIMISTIC OF AN IMPROVEMENT would have been better than saying that Flavio is a pipe dreamer...

It's quite easy to slate what Alonso's saying, but frankly he's pretty much right. Renault are way off the pace, and over-optimism isn't going to fix it.

You never saw Jenson last year saying "Well the car's not all that bad, who knows we could get some points at the next race." Believing a falousy doesn't make it true. Renault need to find some pace.

Also remember that with Briatore saying "Fernando could get a podium in Spain" is adding HUGE amounts of pressure to the poor guy, at his home race. If I were him I'd also be saying "Nope, sorry fans, but it aint that likely I'll be getting a podium for you all to celebrate - so don't get your hopes up."

it looks now like Alonso has lost all options to drive a 2009 car from the current top teams. Ferrari have made it clear that his 2007 season with McLaren did not impress them. Montezemolo had been complimentary to Alonso for most of 2007 but he must have changed his mind in the end when he signed a big contract with Massa.
Formula One's fundamental ethos is about success coming to those with the most ingenious engineering and best .............................. organization, not to those with the biggest budget. (Dave Richards)

Thats why the R27 was slow. Of course the R26 is inferior to R27/R28, it's just that competition has moved further than Renault.

Logic dictates that your maximum optimisation is limited by your initial starting point.

Is it not logical to return to a previous winner and take a different direction than the one that led to the R27/28?

Look at is de-evolving to a earlier state, and then apply the knowledge gained to a new evolution. I think that it is not only possible, but probably more practical than trying to squeeze blood from a stone.

I would just like someone to ask Pat Symonds what would happen if Renault decided that it would be worth looking into.

I do not see the point, the R26 was championship contender and winner. It is probably maxed out in terms out development except some new concepts which are probably already on the R27/R28 and work better in conjunction.

They tested the R26 with bridgestone tyres if you recall after the season, Mclaren MP4-21 was faster than them in testing (I remember Pat Symonds saying this). At that point they realized they are in big trouble.

I also bet if you put the R27 on michelins the R26 used, it would be far quicker totally summing up this idea.

You cannot compare the cars, totally different variables they run around, going back to the R26 even last year is a step backwords.
