Uhm... what intercooler?

My thoughts exactly, it's just a carbon tube with an air filter attached.

That's the air intake. The "intercooler" is (isn't) the piece of aluminium tube running across the engine bay in front of the engine.

my bad, yes just a nice looking intake plenum, no visible intercooling present.

One unusual feature on this one is the axial-entry, tangential-exit on the turbine to accommodate the PTO.




Also, there's a bellows joint right at the turbine entry. The turboshaft seemingly quite long if directly connected to the compressor i.e. one continuous shaft. Is such a large high-RPM device with a flexing region in its middle a unique achievement?

I remember this! It was on NR750 and 125 HP from that displacement was kinda big deal in 1992.

Hardly.. unless..if by epic, you mean epic fail.. & Yamaha had a 125hp 750 on test - in 1972..

I did not write 'epic' i wrote 'kinda' - as it was totaly new architecture and the engine from the get-go was at (or near) the top for that displacement (not talking racing bikes here or something that was on test bench). The biggest fail on that engine (IMHO) was that it was too heavy.

And, please tell me as I was driving lot of bikes at a time and cannot remember myself, which bike that was sold that year made 125 hp from 750 ccm in 1992 'epic fail'?

Huh? Dunno quite what you are trying to express there.

In 1972 Yamaha had shown their GL 750 4 cyl EI 2T roadbike, but chose to to offer the design for sale - solely as a racing machine, & sold a dud 750 4T twin as the streetbike, instead.



The NR Honda effort was an "epic fail", both as a race bike, & as a production streetbike, no question.

Could have a much shorter pipe if they'd simply drilled a clearance hole through the radiator. Running it through the headlight seems like an odd choice, you'd have to run sealed beams to make sure headlight fluid doesn't get sucked in.

The GN Spider II's 1920s unique chain-driven overhead-cam 4v per cyclinder 90º V twin (since any links appear to be broken in this thread)


I read somewhere that it's effectively dry sumped too. If you can call it that. It uses pump-driven squirters instead of the gravity fed setup it was originally designed with. It's still a near total loss oiling system though.
