Renault Sport F1 R.S. 18

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The first thing that stands out is that Airbox, very unique, very high, and very small
Red Bull's RB14 has a similarly small airbox, and coincidentally is using the same Renault engine.
Expect McLaren to come up with something similarly small (especially compared to what we've seen on the Williams or Sauber).

It seems me and my fellas were right about the january teaser; It does represent the 2018 car 8)

But this 3d car looks like a B version of the RS.17. They just have tigtened the sidepods, hanged the rollhoop and the engine cover a bit and put a halo etc.

The only team so far to not use Ferrari style aero structures to push the side pod intakes back. Could that be a misstep?

meh... only the Halo looks quite nice on it.
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Halo blends in very well with the livery, I agree.

A few extra slots and winglets here and there, but for the rest a straight evolution of the '17 car.

Where other teams tried new things and they seem to work because they get copied (like the Mercedes/STR uprights and the Ferrari intakes), the R.S. 18 has none of those. Looks like they went with something they understand to further improve their logistics and engineering departments. Or are they saving up CFD/windtunnel time for '19?

I think all 2018 cars willl show a similar airbox, since it´s just over the top (front) of the halo, so it is where it has to be to get clean air

I thought every team would do it because of the obvious advantages, so it's surprising that Renault haven't. I doubt it's a budgetary thing because even Sauber have managed it.
