Scuderia Ferrari SF71H

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Ferrari retain the high and long sidepod inlets with lower suspension mounts to the chassis where Mercedes has their suspension high. It seems that Red Bull did a bit of both this year.
High sidepods inlets absolutely, but not long. They are so small! There’s a comparison pic that Sky posted on twitter of the cars front on (I can’t work out how to post pictures here lol) but if you find it, check out the sidepod opening Vs the edge of the front tyre. Last year they basically met at the edge and this year the gap is huge. Much smaller. I’m quite excited to see how she do.
Long as front to rear. Mercedes are thin and wide.
Ohhh got cha! Valid point. Can’t wait for the on track comparisons.

I think it is evident now that the introduction of the Halo led to oval shaped air inbox designs (with a longitudinal long axis))and away from the typical triangular shapes.

Looks like the floor has been masked out, zero slots are visible, not even in front of the rear tires.
Compared to Mercedes, this has more visible evolutions but still follows the same 2017 concept (both teams were first and second of the championship for a reason, why change everything).
With the simplicity of that floor, I wouldn't be surprise like many here if in the coming few weeks more stuff are bolted on.

Interesting to note how the regulation failed to ban T-wing, with the interpretation of the remaining shark fin, it is still possible to have the T-wing work the flow to the rear of the car (interesting curved shape here).

Airbox widened.
Actually if you compare it with the later versions (since Japan or so, maybe earlier), SF70H already had intakes on the sides of the airbox.

How are they gonna cool those engines?
With the air inlets - this is one of the benefits of a 50% efficient engine - you need 33% less cooling than a 33% efficient engine.
Not necessarily. In less efficient engines (Mainly N.A.), most of the heat just goes out the exhaust. While on turbo engines, more energy stays within the block rather than just going to waste.
I may be talking B.S., But I think turbo engines need more cooling.

As they did late last year.

I think from the front on photo it looks like the sidepods are quite bulky, its just the opening that is very very small.

I dunno what you’re seeing? When I use the tyres as reference, you can see a gap from top to bottom. Last year you just couldn’t... so bulky or otherwise, they are demonstrably less bulky than last year, in every dimension.

From the top view I don't see the mass of winglets at the outer edges of the top diffusor surface, and the trailing edge of the diffusor appears to be a straight line, all the way to to edge. This makes me think they are using a design similar to the one trialed by Kimi at the end of last year. More squared off at the corners, without the slopped edge and upper surface winglets.

Maybe, just noticed the front on shot there are no rear wheels ??? is this because the side pods are so big ? (joking) or Ferrari have adjusted the photo.

Are the mirrors directing airflow down into the top sidepod intake?
Same thoughts here..

...or, they have just gone to a one wheel approach. They've won already.

:o  that is very poor editing! Or it’s the latest innovation. Front wheel drive and it just drags itself along on the rear diffuser
