Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I realize there are a lot of things going on with this comparison but RIC just did a 123.221 with Hartley at a 126.430. The top speeds are 272.7 for the RB14 and 273.4 for the STR13.

I know it's kind of an apples to oranges thing and there are many variables but this at least seems promising to me as far as the power of the Honda PU goes.

How is going 3.2s slower a positive? Top speed alone can be affected by lots of things, tow, drag, fuel mix etc... Grosjean is currently 4kph quicker than Kimi with the same engine for example.

We know the RB chassis is going to be better and more efficient at producing downforce. They will have less drag than the TR. Let's say TR have to take off all the downforce to get the car moving in a straight line (which is why the lap time is so low - again it's testing so with a grain of salt) I'd bet the RB14 is still slipperier with downforce set up to turn a good lap than the STR13 with minimal downforce.

Lets just compare last years trap numbers then. The current Honda PU in the STR13 is 5.5 kph faster than it was on day 1 in the McLaren last year and that's after 1.5 hours. In a chassis that was late being developed and with a team that is not as large as McLaren.

There are others factors outside drag levels though, you'd imagine the Ferrari had less drag than the Haas too. But obviously without knowing those factors then it's guesswork fair enough.

Which is EXACTLY why I stated that in my first post. All I said was it was encouraging. I didn't claim they are equal or better than Renault. I just said they do not seem to be as woefully under-powered as they were at the start of testing in 2017.

Hartley now faster than Alonso on slower tires. Of course Fred was on a blistering lap when his wheel left him.

Well I didn't say you did claim that to be fair, I wasn't having a go at you. You responded talking about drag levels which is why I mentioned the other factors being involved is all.

And right after I posted it Kimi went top of the speed trap anyway, lol.

Yeah I tried to clarify multiple times that its hard to draw conclusions but it seems encouraging, maybe I wasn't clear enough.

And the STR13 has now posted the same top speed as the W09

Honda sounding cleaner(under constant throttle and acceleration) everytime they go out. Still burbles quite a bit under braking. https://www.pscp.tv/w/1ypKdmWlzwpGW

Moch more important: It did 72 laps without braking down!

89 laps before the lunch break, and one more before the rain just now for a total of 90 so far.
Just as well Hartley was driving it: he's got a lot of endurance driving experience!

Seems Hartley was impressed with the PU, also says it has more power than last year's Renault:

@BrendonHartley, impressed with the engine @HondaRacingF1: "It has more power than the engine http://www.thebestf1.es/directo/ last year"

Hartley says the Honda unit has more power than last years Renault.

If so... I don't know if to laugh or cry for McLaren.

Of course the 2018 Renault will have more power than last year. But its still a bit crazy if true and not just PR.

"Our approach this year is to be first focused on reliability at the beginning of the season,"

"We have to make sure we have good reliability. That is what we have been working on during the winter season - let's see what happens during winter testing.

"We are still fourth in the pecking order, this year will be the first to ensure the reliability. We will bring some performance improvements during the year.

"First we want to focus on tests one and two. In terms of overall performance, we cannot comment clearly on this as it is only the testing spec for us.

"With performance, there is a bit more to come, and so far we're happy about the reliability but there is still a lot of testing to come."
