Mercedes AMG F1 W09 EQ Power+

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

So assuming that the scale is 10cm between each line and that the yellow lines mark the axles ...

The wheelbase would be around 386-388 cm which would be way longer than the old calculation.

I used the ruler tool in PS to measure that stuff

I tried to confirm the assumption of 10cm by measuring the wheel which ended up being 62.xxx pixels which divided by 0.9 is roughly 68cm

I also tried to confirm the assumption that the yellow lines mark the axles by drawing squares around the edges of the front and then the rear tyres which then allowed me to find the middle of those, thus marking the axles.

Ofc the pic is wayyyyy too pixelated/low res to take any of this seriously
Stirling work! This is what we're after.
How come I didn't get any praise for my work bonjon!? :(

The front of the 'cape' is different or what is going on there?

Looks like a massive bargeboard! They are trying to get some air speeded up!

If they are filming it, then presumably it flexes?

They have also increased the number of endplate elements (swept-back black arches) from 6 to 7:

There are still only 6 godsire. 2 & 3 at the bottom aren't split, they're a single piece.

No, they aren't filming the flex. Flex is easily tested in a wind tunnel.

The front wing flaps have been reduced in number and length. At the Y250 location, the flaps no longer appear to be involved very much. This suggests a weakened Y250 vortex is being generated.

This accords with my suspicion that Mercedes have moved away from the use of an increasingly powerful Y250 vortex and manipulating it, and are using the cape to set up a strong vortex that is directed and strengthened by the turning vanes/barge boards. The Y250 vortex that is created is just then used to guide tyre wake, as originally intended, with the cape vortex being used for downforce production or floor "sealing".

Really, on a 60% model, which is presumably constructed with different methods and materials?

Is it though?

I mean yeah to a certain extent, but they are not allowed to use full size models these days. And also the wind tunnel cannot do 150+ MPH?
