Mercedes AMG F1 W09 EQ Power+

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Not only that. That flow field looks gorgeous. Almost no spanwise flow

In this area both lower wishbones and the drive shaft acts together like a lower beam wing?

Williams' got the same solution. However, interesting to see Merc not going for that 'Crab' rear-upper wish-bone solution like McLaren, Williams, Renault and some other teams do. They're basically clearing that area for cleaner downwash towards the difuser.

Yes, I've seen a few additional photos that capture that same area and it definitely appears to be a vent of some sort.

I carried out a rather crude and probably redundant calculation once I found an opportunity.

Assuming the intermediate tyres have a 670mm diameter, I took the front tyre, placed a rectangle to fit its dimensions, halved it to 335 (for a bit more control I guess) and then just queued them side by side until what I could make out of the centre of the rear tyre. Got 3685mm. Of course, there's some margin for error considering the car is parked at a slight angle, there's the parallax effect combined with the rear tyre's visibility or lack thereof.

use this link for the image https://image.prntscr.com/image/k-5SGOC ... puwiAw.png

(found by F12, ctrl+F, search for png)

i just used the same method of measuring the scale on the yellow markings several times (between -30 to 30; -30 to 10; -10 to 0; 0 to 10) and determining the avg. cm/pixel which gives me ~380cm between the middle of the yellow markings

with your 368.5 and my 380 the truth probably lies somewhere in between (like the old calculated 376 ....hehe ... it also shows how a slight increase in pic resolution can change the result .. -6 to 8 cm ... the 376 are just 10 pixels away)

Ah yes! I had this issue earlier with prntscr several months back and I had forgotten the solution, many thanks for this :)

Indeed, at first I thought after your pixel approximation method there would be no point in doing it once more, but as Dumbledore once said, "curiosity is not a sin, Harry ... " :D

Interesting how there is a little flow-viz on the underside of the diffuser(outside corner of the horizontal surface) even though the flow-viz is applied to the top surface.

Right hand side? Looks like a thickish line where it has dripped down onto it and then been blown backwards.

Left hand side.Where the gurney bends downwards. The horizontal surface of the diffuser has a bit of flow-viz on the outside corner
