Well Vettel was certainly lifting in testing (and Melbourne Q2!) last year, so I don't think it's a huge leap. Moreover, why would the journos not mention lifting for any other cars if this were the case? I'm sure they're all lifting on these types of runs by the time they get to start/finish.

Why can't I shake that felling, that 50% of all posts here are about McLaren? It's really annoying for people who don't care about them. How about a McLaren testing thread?

A quick glance highlights that the cars started doing laps around 1:26.2x and the quickest lap towards the end of the race on lap 64 were 1:23.593 (by Hamilton in the lead and two laps to go). At that point, he had a comfortable 3 second gap to Vettel. Comparing a race simulation during Winter testing and the full race is always going to be difficult, because there are various factors to consider. Still, it's interesting to see that between the first few laps when the cars were doing 1:26.2x times to the end on 1:23.6x, there's roughly around 2.5 seconds in difference.

Qualifying was done on a 1:19.149 by LH/Mercedes, which is 4.5 seconds faster than the lap times he finished the race on.

From the above Bottas race simulation, the times with a full tank start around 1:22.7x (high 1:22) and finish consistently in the high 1:19. This is around 3 second difference between full tank and empty tank as well.

Just some food for thought.

So, quite possible if Mercedes would turn up their PU and the softest race tire (the whole sim was on M), a 1.15 or even, with real (racing focus) in the car a mid/low 1.14 is possible.

A 17.1 from Vettel, that's damn fast, they maybe have another .5 in hand.

These are the fastest f1 cars ever. These cars have full fuel race pace that's faster than 2015 q3 time and finishing the race faster than 2016 qualifying. Mercedes low fuel race pace equals the 2010 pole time, but can do it consecutively.

All race pace fastest laps will be broken this year, even the records from the refueling era are going to fall.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. The full race sim by Bottas should represent accurate fuel loads of the actual GP. So I'm thinking a 4.5s improvement would yield 1:15 times or even quicker as you say on fresh tires and empty car.

Lewis' race times were on Soft-Med-Soft. Which should roughly be Med-Hard-Med this year, so those stints should be reasonably comparable.
