The holes act like a parachut ...the rest the air just goes around
Not that simple, how much air flows through and how much cooling occurs depends not only on the intake size but the expansion ratio behind, the blockage effect from the radiators, the relative pressure difference at the intake to the exit, etc.
Large expansion ratio and bigger radiators means you're getting more flow and cooling even with a small intake, you can shrink radiators and sidepods but that causes more blockage which generally means you can't shrink your intakes much even with tighter, hotter running package - that's why even when we see teams bring new, tighter sidepods the intake area doesn't change much from the initial setup on the car.

A heat pocket by the turbo when the car is on slow laps/in laps/pitlane might even be fixed by tighter sidepods because you'd have relatively more/faster airflow up there, which is why it's not really a worry unless it's still doing it once they have the new package on.

Or they are bluffing while searching for some sponsor money.

I don't get this it will be ok by Australia with our new kit on
If they know it's better why didn't they bring that setup. What if they get to Australia and it's not better too late then because they can't go back to this set-up its got proven heat issues and it's not been that quick.

They can't bring something that's not made.

Well virgin attempted to make a car on a computer and it was rubbish so until it's made and tested they have nothing look at red bull when they had issues with what the numbers told them and what they had on track

if the problem is cooling (that we don't know for sure) and the package for Aus is on the making any changes decided during this test will not see the light on Aus.

Because they use this test for correlation, so that they can make adjustements if something isn't right. It's all about having a good baseline. The car in Melbourne won't be a completely different concept. Just temper your expectations a bit, because they won't be winning any races this year. They just need a good year and if they finish 4th, they have done a good job.

I am quite sure they were already set for a change around the exhaust area.

And as I said earlier, tighter sidepods will naturally speed up the airflow in that area anyway.

McLaren used the recommendations of Renault and said they would design their own cooling later on.

Yes, this is the strangest thing, they implied that they will go with the safe option, as recommended by Renault
