Makes sense, with Ferrari's sidepod concept you end up without room to put those small vanes.

Exactly. It was the obvious reason but some got fixated on a throw-away comment from a journo when the car was revealed.

I have too admit I am/was one of them, so thanks to all of you for guiding us noobs the right way.

Yes but not enough to get into the top rad opening. As stated by some of us previously, it appears to be aimed at improving airflow over the sidepods in lieu of the devices used by other teams.

It'll probably affect the rear wing positively as well

It should only help the rear wing by pulling clean air from above, since the mirror air will follow the side pod profile down to the floor. That will also help direct air into the opening on the side pod, just not directly. Well done Vanja!

Funny thing is that the old higher RW would be in better clear air (though not necessarily more efficient). The huge air intake, the mirrors and the halo actually hides or obstructs the RW in that shot above.

Great work Vanja. I suspected the rear wing initially but didn't have the time to do the CFD.
Also the mirror doesn't have to have more drag this year. Your 2018 mirror model has very squared off leading edge compared to the 2017 model which is has a smoother leading edge. This is the reason for your increased drag.
The conclusion remains that the mirrors are for air flow to the rear of the car and not the inlets.

Piolas video has it incorrect. There is a higher pressure in front of the radiator opening even through air flows into it. Meaning it wont be "sucking" in air from the mirrors. I wish motosport.com invests in some CFD their car models are very good already.
