McLaren Grand Prix League 2008

OK, I'm tired and

trying to take the easy route here. It seems I'm missing something about the scoring system of the McLaren League - probably something glaringly obvious and humiliatingly simple. But at this point I don't care how foolish this might make me look. Anyway, in order to make informed transfers in the future (as my original selection was apparently based on a false premise) I'd like someone to try and set my record straight. Here's everything I remember about the scoring system:

Points for qualifying, drivers:
A simple sequence (23-Position) i.e. (22,21,20 ... 1), pole +5 pts.

Points for qualifying, teams:
As above, but no compensation for pole.

Points for race, drivers:
1st driver earns 30 pts
Positions 2 - 7 (28-2*(Position-2)) i.e. (26,24 ... 16)
Positions 8 - 22 (23-Position) i.e. (15,14,13 ... 1)
Fastest lap +5 pts, positions gained +1 pt (each), black flagged -10 pts

Points for race, teams:
As above, but points only for positions (for both of the team's drivers?)

I'll illustrate my confusion with my current team, which is as follows:

Constructors:

Ferrari:
Raikkonen - qualy 16th/7pts + race 8th/15pts = 22 team pts
Massa - qualy 4th/19pts + race 13th/10pts = 29 team pts
Total - 51 pts, McLaren League awarded 42 pts ?

Toyota:
Trulli - qualy 6th/17pts + race 15th/8pts = 25 team pts
Glock - qualy 9th/14pts + race 10th/13pts = 27 team pts
Total - 52 pts, McLaren league awarded 21 pts ?

Force India:
Fisichella - qualy 17th/6pts + race 21st/2pts = 8 team pts
Sutil - qualy 19th/4pts + race 16th/7pts = 11 team pts
Total - 19 pts, McLaren league awarded 12 pts ?

Drivers:

Hamilton -
qualy 1st/22+5pts, grid 1st, race pos 1st/30+0pts, total 57pts/ awarded 57pts, OK

So my "own total" comes to 373 pts, while the McLaren League actually awarded 278 pts. Given that I participated in this last year already, one could've thought that I had gotten the rules down already, but apparently not. I don't expect anyone to go through the numbers as such, but if there's something glaringly obvious (or even a partial solution) I'll appreciate being steered in the right direction.

I'm not sure what means 'compensation', but the team on pole also gets 5 points.

For drivers positions 2-7 it will be (26-2*(Position-2)

Massa was not classified in the race, so 51-10=41 points for Ferrari. Not sure where is 1 point.

Same here. 52-21=31. Where are 10 points?

Force India:
Fisichella - qualy 17th/6pts + race 21st/2pts = 8 team pts
Sutil - qualy 19th/4pts + race 16th/7pts = 11 team pts
Total - 19 pts, McLaren league awarded 12 pts ?

And here. 19-9=10. 2 points difference.

Webber -
qualy 15th/8pts, grid 14th, race pos 17th/6+0pts, total 14pts/ awarded 9pts, ?

Same. 14-6=8. 1 point difference.

Fisichella -
qualy 17th/6pts, grid 16th, race pos 21st/2+0pts, total 8pts/ awarded 7pts, ?

Same. 8-2=6. 1 point difference.

Vettel -
qualy 10th/13pts, grid 9th, race pos 20th/3+0pts, total 16pts/ awarded 14pts, ?

pretty close to my current understanding as well - after I took further steps to clarify the issue. Basically, the League follows very specific instances of FIA's classifications. With regard to qualifying, the points-determining grid is the one with all penalties applied, not the order of speed itself. This, for example, explains why Ferrari got 42 pts - Raikkonen qualified 16th, but was 15th on the "rectified" result sheet that forms the basis for the qualy points, and presumably "overtaking points" (i.e. positions gained) as well. On the other hand I don't think Sutil's pit start (he would've been a bit higher than last on the grid) had a similar effect on points - but of this I'm still a bit unsure.

About the race, points are only awarded to those drivers that the FIA classifies as "finishers" (i.e. are given a position other than DNF) - or those drivers that get points, regardless of their having crossed the finish line or not. In this regard, the order of the DNFs doesn't matter - they don't get points for the race unless they get championship points as well, nor do they get points for places gained in relation to other drivers. This, obviously, is a very important - if not central - consideration that I failed to take into account. Perhaps I suffered too few DNFs last season to take notice. It will be an uphill struggle to try and improve from this, the effort will practically exhaust all of my "transfer windows". I'm just hoping for a couple of good races late in the season.

I've also got a newfound appreciation for how Honda must've felt in 2007. The motivation is completely different when struggling to get away from the backmarkers. I wonder whether I could get Ross Brawn to throw in a few hours of Grandprix League consultation for free?
