Scuderia Ferrari SF71H

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The central section boat tail has gone back to having a more well defined angular channel, similar to last year but not as pronounced. Gone is the flatter, more rounded solution from late 2017, and all of 2018 to date. They have also included the winglet on the outer edge, first seen in FP1 in Melbourne.

The new profile reduces the AOA of the central section, likely improving the stability of the flow, with a slight reduction in total expansion. I assume they are trading a small amount of total downforce for more consistent/stable downforce by keeping the central flow attached over a broader working range.

Hopefully this will increase the drivers confidence in the car and allow Seb to push harder.

That's pretty much it, mate. :) There are so many thing influencing diffuser, it's crazy. I remember seeing the radical diffuser on SF70-H in Hungary (?) and was thinking - that's a very big step, not sure if they can pull it off. Lot's of small thing need to be working perfectly all over the car to make a decent amount of downforce without excessive separation in diffuser.

And they call it a stall. A STALL!

It does appear as if Ferrari actually used this diffuser in Melbourne so not new.

Do you have any evidence of that, like a photo? I keep a close eye out for changes to the diffusor and I'm pretty sure this is new.

Here is a better view via AMUS, clearly showing an updated profile in the center section

It didn't. It was just tested for a short period of time during one of the FP.

The outer edge winglet was tested in FP1. The update to the central tunnel section was not, and is new.

I’m not asking this as to dispute it, only out of interest... is there somewhere (or can you or someone kindly create) a comparison image? I’m really hoping these changes combined with the rumoured floor in China reap some benefit
