Aston Martin Red Bull Racing TAG Heuer RB14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I'm late to the party, but which part is the X-Wing?

I tried googling it but got star wars pictures and then photos from tge 90's of the wings mounted above the sidepods at Monaco and the like...
They are the aero profiles on top of the sidepod inlets, where the crash structure used to be.

I thought it was the vertical panel on the outer side of the radiator entry (first introduced by Ferrari), but then I realised that is more like a Tie fighter, not an X-wing!

Some analysis from the usual suspects regarding cooling/packaging changes would be great. Did they switch to water/air in 2018?

Some posts about X-wings and Y wings have been removed as they were not car specific. Please stick to topic. Thanks

Red Bull seem to be the only team who aren't using a distinct 'under cut' in their sidepods (bar Sauber, but Saubers sidepods are all 90 degree corners). And I have to say visually Red Bull's sidepods look so much more appealing too. Is the 'cola bottle' trend now no longer that relevant? Are Red Bull the pioneers moving away from that trend?

Sauber C32 has similar design of side-pods (referring to "no undercut")
