Problems with tyre temperatures

Post

He's a question........

A very simplistic thought needing an explanation

Take (for example) Heidfeld - it is said that his lack of qualifying pace is down to an inability to get another temperature into his tyres.

So...........a simple brain like mine wonders - why don't they just turn up the heat up under the blankets?

I KNOW there has to be a good reason why not - I'm curious to know what it is

The tyre blankets only heat up the tyres construction to a certain point, . Heidfelds problems are keeping the tyres at the right temperature when lapping. Having them hotter out of the pits is not going to fully solve the problem.

Thanks - I guessed that part

It seems obvious that the time between pulling the blankets off and getting down the pitlane let's some temperature fall out of the tyre - after that it's down to the driver to do his job and get them fully up to operative temp....

I wondered if there was a reason they didn't just add more heat to start with.......

Would more heat damage the tyre while in the blanket?

Are the restrictions in the regs that control the max temperature they can use?

BTW - has anyone ever been to an F1 test and smelt the tyres "cooking" in their little ovens? They DO smell pretty hot!

it isn't only the driver. setup plays a big role. BMW have traditionally focused on long run setups and tyre work. Kubica seems to cope with this much better. whatever Nick does Kube will continue to hold an advantage in quali speed in my view and even more important he is collecting race experience at the front as well. Nick has his job cut out.
