If you have the accumulator geared to the MGU-K it's fine, look at the flow chart. In the end it would be the MGU-K powering the wheels not the accumulator. There's no rule that says MGU-K can only receive power from the ERS via the the CE, the MGU-H, and engine ancillaries are also up for grabs.

Note how much longer the 2017 exhausts are.
They really did an amazing job moving the cooling behind the engine like that, not to mention leaving a smaller overall footprint.

FiA poo poo'd the idea I believe.

It would make sense to have a variable swash pump which is active under deceleration (gear change/braking) to charge the accumulator from which pressure is drawn during acceleration for steering, gearbox, throttles and other actuators.

The only drawback I can see is packaging the accumulators.
make them part of the oil tank.

Not a huge difference compared to 2016, but the rads are way thicker than this year.

Interesting article. Abiteboul estimates they are 0.4-0.45 off in terms of engine, which translates roughly in 30hp.
We know from official sources they started the season at >950hp, and Cyril just told us they brought 0.1s improvement in China, which leaves me thinking they must be at around 960-965hp as we speak.

do they also count gains in aero/cooling requirement (drag) as improvement in laptime or only power/torque output and optimisation in software?

Ferrari and Mercedes don't have 1000hp in race trim. Try about 970hp for them and then take off 40hp for the true figures for Renault. From what I understand the performance improvement for Canada is courtesy of some extra hp and a weight reduction from the new 2018 ers-k unit that was supposed to be the new 2017 ers-k unit.

Renault started with 950 HP, but did not start using it immediately.
During the winter they got 30 HP more.
From testing in Barcelona they first used 15 HP during the races.
From Bahrain they started using the other 15 HP, but only in qualifying.
From now on they will use every race a little bit more of that second 15 HP.
They are not using yet the whole 950 HP in the races.
The use of the entire 950 HP still takes until the next engine change.

How much torque does it make? ~405ft/lbs peak?

950hp at 11.500rpm will give you about 550Nm of torque, I guess it will have a bit more torque at even lower RPM but it's hard to say.

But remember this is not a fuel flow unlimited engine.
There is a linear fuel ramp up until you hit 10,500 then it’s flat right?
