Sources have suggested both sides are pushing hard for a Red Bull-Honda deal to be sorted - with the Canadian Grand Prix in June potentially key to a final decision as both Honda and Red Bull's current supplier Renault are set to introduce engine upgrades for that race.
Red Bull is keeping tight-lipped on the state of negotiations, but has suggested it is waiting for Honda's latest upgrade so it can judge its full potential.
"We are very satisfied with the way the partnership with Toro Rosso is going," Marko told Autosport.
"The reliability has already improved considerably. And as far as performance goes, we'll wait for the next update."
Red Bull's desire to wait until Canada before making a decision would put it beyond the preferred May 15 date that Renault has favoured, so it is unclear how the French manufacturer would respond if there was no commitment by that date.
Although it is understood that any Red Bull-Honda alliance will not result in the kind of financial injection to the team that McLaren enjoyed, there is scope for a stronger alliance than just being engine partners.

Don't know when (it was after Winter testing), but AMuS stated Mateschitz is keen on selling TR to Honda.
I can't see Honda wanting their own team, they've had very little success as a full works team outfit and lots as a partner. That was the concensus of Ito former CEO when the McLaren Honda partnership was announced. Hachigo may see things differently, but unless Honda get on top of their engine deficits then I would say that they will remain an engine supplier only.

Franz Tost is the pivot point in that argument, however.

He can bridge the cultures, and that could be a very attractive point for Honda, especially if his handling of the integration has impressed the Honda board beyond reasonable expectation.

I just want the junior team with a works engine deal, and cash injection.

The story would be media gold if they could pull off a surprise for 2019!

To be surprise they should already have investments and make mass people hiring. But if they start early (this) year they have enough time to be very competitive in next era. And start to validate their progress in 2020.

Honda won’t buy their own team for various reasons. Firstly they don’t trust the administration and politics of the sport which despite being taken over by Liberty remains murky. They dont have to deal with that as much by supplying only engines. Secondly running an f1 team is outside their expertise by their own acknowledgment. Thirdly while in many ways it makes financial sense to have your own team they can be very expensive in others, particularly if Honda decides to withdraw and can’t find a buyer.

In their entire F1 history Honda have only owned the team when they had no other choice such as in the 60s when no one wanted their engines or in 2005 when BAT told them either Honda buys the team or it gets shut down.

If they were to change their minds STR would not be their target for acquisition, it would be a top team like RBR.

It would be an ideal option to create a sort of modern Super Aguri team which every one knows is Honda, but without them having to front up. Bring a manager in or keep Tost in place and have a figurehead, such as Suzuki to 'do their bidding'

they don't need their own team Honda can't produce a world beater chassis and aero its very enough for them to provide PU to great chassis like RBR .. they are in for 2 reasons
to learn their engineers the new hybrid technology and ICE tricks and to marketing their new direction for the road cars turbo + DI + less fuel .. bringing back the enthusiasts fans
anyway there is a possibility we will hear the RBR-Honda announcement soon since renault is insisting about the 15 may deadline.

They don't need to build their own team, it is there already. Buy STR and you get everyone in it too. just put a manager in and call it what ever you want, but you still have full control of it.

buy it doing what ? for what ?
if they are to win it will happen with RBR .. good example is 2004 season its the chassis , aero what gave advantage for Ferrari over honda that year.

F1sokuho has learned marko and yamamoto had the second meeting on Sunday during Azerbaijan GP,after the first meeting on Saturday.
It also said that Renault boss Abiteboul told marko and horner that he want Red Bull to make things clear before May 13th.
So it seems Red Bull want to make the decision later, based on the performance when both Reanult and Honda introduce the first upgrade. But Reanult really dont want to offer an extension to the FIA's May 15 deadline.

It is not about extension it is about not giving Honda/RB any inside info about next year PU as early as possible. Even If RB on 15.5 presents to FIA that is staying with Renault, they can switch to later in season, but thy will have to break the contract and probably have pay penalties.

hopefully redbull honda is annouced. there is no point with renault , it want a title run for itself and redbull will be a hinderance. they dont mind supplying mclaren because mclaren are all talk no action. they are even slower than renault team. so reanult dont care than much

Great ! i take some days off to recover from arguments on this thread and others, and I return to find these are still raging. This is a HONDA thread and how McLaren are doing, or their points standings has nothing to do with HONDA.
Please discuss the Honda PU and stop all this silly off topic arguing.
