Very interesting insight from Norris re. New updates, not sure if that has already been posted, couldn’t be bothered to wade through the pages of people’s unfounded speculation and opinion quoted as fact

I don't think they have the perfect set-up for the new nose yet. But hopefully, this test helped them sort that out. They should be able to find a little more performance at Monaco.

But in reality, the nose was never going to bring major performance gains, its main objective is to direct airflow. The new nose is quiet revolutionary in the way it does that.

Now that McLaren can control the airflow at the front, they can bring updates to the floor, bargeboard and sidepods to really improve the performance. No one really knows what updates they are bringing to Monaco or Canada, but improving car stability and aero efficiency should be a top priority.

How big did you think they were? We’ve seen the performance gain, 2 or 3 tenths on a circuit like Barcelona in comparison to the steps others have taken, so we know how big the update is

Only time will show if that carry’s over to other circuits, or indeed if more can be extracted.

What Norris said is it’s added downforce & reduces lap time but made to car harder to drive

I did say when people were going nuts about it the week before that we should only expect 2-3 tenths if we're lucky given everyone else's upgrade packages, these things aren't bolt on and run solutions. They need time.

Thanks for that.

I am a McLaren fan since 1988 and will stand by them until forever - good and bad times !! !!

Our current form is disapointing, but with the late change to Renault the first part of the season was always going to be difficult. As many others have stated, this will be a building year and I am really looking forward to second half of the season and 2019.

I like the new Rear Suspension and really hope they can get it working well.

I think PP will get us there soon.
1997 was the indoctrination year for me

Mclaren first for me, I don't care about the drivers, I just don't want to see Vetel in the team, everyone else is welcome

There's still so much more to come, this is just a teaser. There's so much more surface area they're not yet taking advantage of, especially compared to the top 3. That nose must have taken a fair bit to produce, but it was a necessary step for them to get the most out of what they're planning to do in the middle of the car.

WRT the upgrade package, McLaren made the largest step in performance in Spain. There is and Autosport Plus piece by Gary Anderson (Paywalled) https://www.autosport.com/f1/feature/82 ... yre-change.

Where 100% represents the average fastest across the first 5 GPs, the respective team performances are as follows;

Mercedes

Five-race average: 100.189%
Spanish GP: 100.000%
Change for Spain - 0.189%

Ferrari

Five-race average: 100.198%
Spanish GP: 100.173%
Change for Spain - 0.025%

Red Bull

Five-race average: 100.680%
Spanish GP: 100.844%
Change for Spain + 0.164%

Renault

Five-race average: 101.788%
Spanish GP: 102.123%
Change for Spain + 0.335%

Haas

Five-race average: 101.939%
Spanish GP: 101.897%
Change for Spain - 0.042%

Force India

Five-race average: 102.365%
Spanish GP: 103.312%
Change for Spain - 0.053%

McLaren

Five-race average: 102.422%
Spanish GP: 102.032%
Change for Spain -0.390%

Toro Rosso
Five-race average: 102.926%
Spanish GP: 103.006%
Change for Spain + 0.080%

Sauber

Five-race average: 103.377%
Spanish GP: 103.266%
Change for Spain - 0.111%

Williams

Five-race average: 103.529%
Spanish GP: 104.624%
Change for Spain + 1.095%

In order, the Delta in performance change for Spain was;

McLaren -0.390%
Mercedes - 0.189%
Sauber - 0.111%
Force India - 0.053%
Hass - 0.042%
Ferrari - 0.025%
Torro Rosso + 0.080%
Red Bull + 0.164%
Renault + 0.335%
Wiliams + 1.095%

Some of the swing in Delta will be circuit specific, but it will be interesting to monitor this as the season progresses.

If we're talking about 2-3 tenths on others, then we can conclude that it was a big update on its own. And, as it was said above, it's the nature of the upgrade that McLaren will reap the benefit in time.

Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Haas were always going to be good in Barcelona. They didn't even bring any (major) updates. Let's hope the next few updates will get them there.

If the "last year Ferrari" claims are accurate, then they should be hard to beat in Monaco as well...
