The engine cover is opened more + the chimney is back. Is it hotter today?

Im not sure if this is the case but perhaps this is preparation for Monaco - the slower average speed could mean less cooling capacity, so they have a new cooling package for the next race they are testing?

Looks like there are some internal modifications going on with cooling

Don't think he questioned the stegosaurus fins, but the shape of the bodywork

Could just be the angle/lighting - but the engine cover looks vastly different. There’s like an indentation on top of the side pod at the front, and it appears more square shaped toward the rear cokebottle... anyone else see that?

Its been like that (and I've always found the indent strange) since launch, might be slightly more pronounced due to lighting.

Its sealed though, not open, so not sure why they have it on, probably quick A/B testing on how much heat can be handled without opening it.

Unsurprising considering the profile of the sidepod is pretty similar to the one on the McLaren.

Are we certain these sidepod vanes are vortex generators, and not just turning vanes designed to push turbulent air spilling off the barge boards and top tire wake wide so that the air behind them can stay attached to the top of the sidepods going back to the rear wing and floor?

I ask because I don't exactly understand what the vortexes would be doing. Mercedes works the air down low really hard, so it makes sense to have draggy elements on the lower aero bits, like the barge board and leading edge of the floor. Those we know work to seal the floor, increasing downforce. Up on the sidepods, you're not sealing anything, and there are better ways to condition the airflow, like the "slats" that adorn the sidepod openings.

I'm of the mind that Mercedes can't keep the flow attached at the extremities of the sidepods to be able to do anything useful with it downstream, so kicking it out wide might help the inboard laminar flow stay attached longer. Thoughts?

Their profile will create vortexes that rotate inward towards the car body center line as they move rearward. It looks to me like they'd hug the down bend of the sidepod.

I assumed they are using them to try and get some flow from atop the sidepods to roll over the edge and eventually feed the top of the diffuser.

Indeed, it's point is to kill off lift by 'rolling' air off the top. In this case the VGs help keep the flow attached in the downward curve
