Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Relative to power supply performance, do we know if the current MGU-K is lacking any performance other than being overweight?

Come Canada we are going to read that the new engine is only worth a good tenth, because the other four should have come from the new MGU-K. Wait for it!

Verstappen got a new MGU-K on friday and another one on sunday. Ricciardo’s K dropped during the race. This is still the 2016 unit right?

Where they ever designed to last half a season? In ‘16 the powerunits where to last only a quarter season.

The MGU-K issues have become more annoying than the Alternator failures back in the V8 days.
They are not sure whether the new K would survive 14+ races so they stick with the old one for now.
In terms of what to expect in Canada...well, this is what Remi Taffin promises in an interview days before the Monaco GP.

What can we expect from the imminent engine upgrade?
Race seven, the Canadian Grand Prix, is where we will introduce a fresh engine taking advantage of some upgrades. I hope the gains match our expectations; we’re looking forward to seeing this in action.

It's only 10-12bhp, that's why Red Bull might not use it until later when it's time for an engine swap, it's not worth sacrificing a grid penalty for.

Straight from some Mclaren staff.

If you work it back it does actually come out remarkably close to the 1/10th of a second gandharva was speculating too - so helpful but not massive.

True, and even though there's been a multitude of issues, at least it can last weekend's, the Renault in-house unit spoken about since 2016 still hasn't seen the light of day. So I guess the original little jab holds true  (also sorry)

Maybe Renault should look at asking Mclaren to provide a working mgu-k unit.

Actually something that makes sense. Maybe McLaren and Renault can come to a long-term agreement when Red Bull jumps ship, McL may be reluctant to put a good MGU-K anywhere near RB's realm.

Yeah could be an interesting idea i think, neither have the big bugs to spend, but together they could co develop different aspects that would benefit both
