Looks like they are trying to figure out how to tackle next year's regulations.
Doubt it, something like this was tested in Brasil 2016 and is possibly a better solution if it can handle front wheel wake properly.

Next year's front wings will be rediculously simple, so something as complex as this is hardly comparable.
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Possible. Quite a radical change though for the wing.

Why the new front wing is matte black? Easier to analyze flow-vis (assuming that they now rely on on-track testing way more than ever having the correlation issues).

They could be eliminating some vorticies and comparing wings to see it it matches tunnel data in hopes to solve their aero issues.

Might also be the case for going back to a simple turning vane setup instead of the one originally introduced with the nose.

Yes, either way, they certainly are doing a lot of testing around the front flow structure. It'll be interesting to see what they end up with.

It's not a race ready wing, they're just testing airflow to try and get on top of their aero problem and apparently it worked.


That's why McLaren brought an experimental Aero package to Spielberg. Front wing, underbody and baffles were new. "It's the starting point of a new concept," reveals a team member. Alonso played in the first practice the test pilot. The engineers mounted ram pressure gauges and gauges on the car and sprayed Flowviz on the experimental parts. The test was worth it. The aero developments provided the hoped for flow values. They must now be converted into contact pressure. Despite the positive findings, McLaren can not drive with the new parts. They are still too heavy and not made of the desired material. The earliest possible assignment is the GP Hungary.

Must be a dumb concept which does not have resources to build a new sidepod and barge boards.

The problem is evident that the diffuser is not powerful enough as it is not sealed properly due to inadequate barge board flow.

Drag is high because of a bad sidepod design

The whole depends only on the wigns to get around the track

I don't know if they're lost or just side tracked. Onething that gives me solace is that RBR struggled last year and they found themselves ...

Can you post this in my 2018 aero developments thread? I think it highlights beautifully how the car improved massively by turning the edge of the bargeboard into a wing, or adding wing devices in that area.
