Aren't people basically suggesting there's the absolute maximum power mode and then a mode that's just slightly more conservative than that?
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Quite probably, yes, there will be a qualifying mode, gates open, maximum deployment, minimum recovery.

And within that there will be nuances of it that have more or less aggressive timing/injection settings, etc, where the engine is run in the detonation region for Q3 mode and pulled back for reliability in Q1 and Q2

That is normal qualifing mode, they use this for every stint in Q1, 2 and 3. But they use the most agressive version of it only in Q3, most of the time. Mercedes (and Ferrari also this year) are 0.3-0.5s faster in Q3. Drivers must anticipate for this.
So according to you Mercedes have two versions of “free load mode”, one more aggressive than the other! Maybe you care to explain how the more aggressive version works.
More agressive combustion.

Higher temps, in-cilinder pressure, maybe even some allowed knock. The can vary ignition/injection timing, increase turbo pressure. All is ofcourse at the expense of more engine wear and the chance of blowing up the engine.

'Free load mode" is a mode intended to extract the maximum power output possible, so what is the scope of there being two versions, one more powerful than the other?.
It might be that one power mode is better than the other on certain tracks or it's more likely a case of Mercedes having a slightly less powerful mode to deploy as an ICE gets older so they can keep the damage to the ICE under control and ensure they don't have to replace an ICE earlier than planned if everything else has gone perfectly.

For those interested:

the 2.0 spec should give 1,5 tenth
the 2.1 spec should give 2 tenths

Lewis also talked about "lots of real positive developments coming through in the future" (for W09) but for now keeping our heads down.

Is that compounded?
Ie the 2.1 engine 3.5 tenths on previous engine?

That may have been why they weren't in a rush delivering the engine upgrades. They knew they had power units in the pipeline that would allow them to walk away with the rest of the season. If anyone's going to introduce unbeatable engines this season, it will be them. They've been doing it for four years, with this one odd delay that coincides with significant engine formula changes.

Gutted for those hard working team members in factories for double DNF today. Did Merc bring new gearbox with new PU?

Their last double DNF was 2016 Spanish GP for totally different reasons! Hamilton's last DNF was 2016 Malaysian GP which cost him the championship that year. It is very rare to see a Merc DNF, let alone two. And both were due to mechanical failures!

Loss of fuel pressure is what I found. I don't know if it's true or not
