This championship is going to be decided by driver quality. Lewis in pole, Gasly sixth!
Who could have imagined this just a couple of hours ago?

I hope we continue to have wet weather races / qualifying where engine etc don't matter so much and the very best drivers can shine.

As for Ricciardo, the universe was against him.

Of course it is.

I remember a certain driver winning a race by going from full wets to slicks when everyone else had to do the usual thing Of going through inters first. This was at Monaco

Guess who it was?
The guy who won by team orders? Sorry. I just had to. Yes there's skill involved but don't take away from Mercedes in the rain.

This is just not true. It gets a bit tiring reading already. There are and have been so many important factors. What do you even want to tell me? That the starting grid from today shows you the quality of drivers from top to bottom? Or that Verstappen is as bad as his place in Qualifying today?

There are more races in wet and changing conditions Lewis has performed great even in the McLaren.......plz now don't come out and say McLaren is better in rain too....next what if Lewis goes to Ferrari, then Ferrari will be best in rain.... #-o

Ferrari was simply slower in these conditions. It has nothing to do with LH's abilities. Otherwise Bottas would've been 8th or so.
Now that is just silly. Ability is at least partially involved. Why oh why do things have to be so black or white?

1st and 2nd is much better than 1st and 4th.
No it is exactly as silly as I think. Or explain to me how Lewis managed to get pole in very difficult conditions without any skill being involved. In those conditions, I think it is generally agreed that the influence of driver ability is increased. Of course performance is still largely down to the car, but ability counts for nothing? Stop it.

Universe? They already risked in Q1 with yellow tyres, then what happened in Q2? He went out too late when rain was too heavy?

And that is the funny part..... without a slow car blocking him for 10 laps and losing 18 sec in them to the leader, Lewis would have easily won the race

Hamilton has generally been good in wet/Changable conditions ever since he joined F1. If as has been stated he has won every wet race for the last 5 years then unless I’m mistaken he hasn’t been alone the mercedes cars has he?

Why do people even talk as if driver skills are only being shown in wet conditions? Driving in dry conditions and in wet conditions are two completely different things. A driver being fastest in wet conditions is not necessarily the fastest overall. This doesn't make sense.

Where has Hamilton been compared to Bottas all weekend? Where has his supreme driving skills been in difficult conditions when his car wasn't behaving well like in all FPs?

So Cooken. Why don't you blow Bottas horn too? I have read many times that Bottas is not as good as Rosberg, but the same guys saying Rosberg was not good in the rain.

Hamilton had one guy to beat. Well done to him.

I wonder if Mercedes will put Softs on their car for the starts tomorrow. With a 1-2, they may be able to block the Ferraris, even if they start on the USs.
I strongly believe, it's about who comes ahead after first pit stop. So, no points for running longer on this track on the first stint. Make a stop as soon as there is a possibility, bolt the hard(est) tire possible for the car and go all the way to the end.
Does anyone have the available tires for the race? I suppose all have a set of new Mediums available?

I think thr weather will be really hot tomorrow; so my guess is Mercedes may be cautious about putting US and then being forced to pit early and potentially into traffic.

Given the nature of the track (like Monaco) it would make sense to retain a 1-2 into the first corner, then try to bunch up the field as much so that none of the Ferraris can pit (as it would put them into traffic). By doing that, they could retain performance in the tire towards the end of the stint. Being in the lead also means you are the first to get a free space to pit. I think the Soft tire may be the less risky option, then go to the mediums later in the stint.

Or indeed a US-S race to make sure you are not vulnerable at the start.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

That's exactly why its the universe. Even his team made dumb decisions to help set his mind out of joint and bend his chances.

Am I correct in saying tyre selections will only be revealed seconds before the formation laps? Will only add to the audience and excitement if so and the race start should be monumental. Should be a nice tense race.

Because every tom, dick and harry can win in dry, including a Maldonado. When it rains, the same mortals end up in barriers and it's easy to know throughout the modern history, who have consistently won in wet conditions. The Senna, The Schumacher and The Hamilton. It's that simple.
