You underestimate how much F1 drivers work. BTW there were unrestricted testing in MS' days.

In F1, talent matters as much as in football.
The thing is, you can be Maradona playing with another 10 monkeys and you will never win. That´s the same as FA in the shitty R28.

To suceed, you must have individual talents (to design, manufacture, drive and plan strategies) AND build a strong team also.

Get my idea?

Just what I was thinking: Coulthard in his McLaren 1998-2000.

Perfectly said :) All components have to come together at the right time and in the right manner to produce a championship winning team and/or driver.

firstly assuming that the f1 drivers are the best in the business
(and by that i mean the ones that could afford and sustain there
career to the highest level and not the myriad of drivers that
have the skill but didn't fit in)

then its not really raw talent but mind management that is the key
e.g. DC seems happy to just be driving a F1 car (throughout his career)

its takes a certain amount of selfishness or aragance (for want of
better words)to become WDC and nice people just don't seem to have it
killer instinct perhaps

I dont think many top sportsmen or performers of any kind would make
what we might call 'good mates' as they are driven / selfish / arrogant
/focused (call it what you will)
..?
