It would be a bit of a head scratcher if it does pan out that way. Don't get me wrong, if it did happen, I'd be thrilled, because in my opinion, Esteban is the real deal, but like you said, on a business side, why would Mclaren develop a Mercedes driver? Are Mclaren eyeing some Mercedes personnel? Are they getting paid, or is it simply to improve short term competitiveness, with a more capable driver, based on their performances? Would they now have an option for him permanently?
Ocon won't get a Merc seat till at least 2021, so why not hire a highly rated driver free of cost?
because McLaren has his pilot better than Okon, Norris
Unproven and being beaten by Russel in F2.

Alonso vs Ocon will be interesting. But what would be Mclaren's reason for developing a driver for one of their rivals, while destorying any meaning of their young drivers program?

Maybe it would be a 2 year contract (this year and next). You get to measure someone against ALO that you can then measure against Sainz next year. Also Ocon has 29 points ...you add that to Alonso's 44 you're right there behind Renault.

To be fair, that's 29 points in an on average quicker car.

With Bob Fernly out of Force India, is it likely he gets a place in Mclaren and in what capacity if that happens?
They Have Zak, they have Gil... I can't see where he would fit in, but you never know. I think Mclaren's needs are greater in the engineering and Technical departments.
Zak isn't an experienced CEO in F1 and could use a sidekick given all the restructuring.
That's a good point, by the way
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

After Horner's podcast and Marko's recent statement regarding him, I struggle to believe that.

Most people in F1 aren't always honest, not easy to know who's telling the truth. But you wonder why either party would lie about it.

Maybe, maybe not, but according to him Red Bull wanted him. Renault also expressed interest, but it seems at this stage in his career, he only wants to commit on a year to year basis, Renault want stability. The truth of the matter is Fernando is as fast as he was 10 years ago. Nobody believed he could return to Mclaren with Ron Dennis there, but he did. Obviously, somebody is misrepresenting the situation, either Fernando or Red Bull. But none of us can come out and definitively say "nobody wants Fernando", except you work for all the teams in F1.

When you consider a choice between Gasly and Alonso...
Not an Alonso fan, but there is no debating over which is the better driver.

He was offered a drive in (i think) 2012, and did not, so could he be referring to this?

Do you really believe anything coming from alonso mouth. after all the negativity he shown to honda. you reckon honda would want him again. makes no sense. this guy is making things up. because the reality no top team wants him. i cant see come back to f1. because the top 3 team will be the same for lot more years to come

he was offered only I think for 2009 if I'm not mistaken. Ted explicitly asked him at the end of interview something like " so they offered you DR's position " and he replied "yes"
