I would be happy if Ocon joins Mclaren because he and Carlos would be a strong and ambitious duo. I only hope Mclaren will do things better than now, because their mid/second half of the season is being atrocious.

If McLaren does not sign Norris before the end of September, then they will lose it. Therefore, the composition of McLaren for 2019 - Norris - Sainz.

No law against him extending, Ocon has been on loan, and will be until at least 2021. Lando can do the same.

Norris is in with a shout to win F2. If he does win, McLaren will have to find him a seat somewhere to race next year, which will be tough if he doesn't get the McLaren seat. I don't see Norris extending if he has to wait in line. It would be a few years before he would have another shot (if McLaren sign Ocon), and no other F1 teams would give him a shot if he remains a McLaren junior.

This is just speculation on my part, Mercedes are desperate to keep Ocon in F1, Mclaren were an option and from all indications, they were open to the idea, hence the seat fitting in June. Lando is 18, I get the feeling Mclaren will want to be careful with him, not to have another case of a junior driver being promoted and not succeeding. If they could find him a drive elsewhere, for a year, one of the more likely options is Toro Rosso, if they are still interested, for 2019. If Mercedes want to keep Ocon in Mclaren for 2 years, then maybe Mercedes can offer Lando a Formula E drive for 2019/2020 season. Like I said, all speculation on my part, I haven't seen such reports anywhere, but just suggesting there are avenues for negotiations.

I'm not expecting to see them back at the top next year, I doubt anyone is. I do want to see clear progress, a forward advancement, moving in the right direction. Without setting targets and pecking order, I think this is reasonable.

Nobody is expecting any podiums, but we do expect a much better car with a clear development path.
