Am i thinking right that Hamilton could have edged it if he had a tow? He never had one on any of his Q3 runs? Seems to me Toto wasnt that down, that is a very small gap to Ferrari if at all...

yes the first run he was ahead of Bottas, but he still set the fastest first sector time in Qualy
the 2nd run they were no where as close to get any advantage of tow

So how do you explain that the two Ferraris were slower than Ham in S1, on both occassions (where have a chicane and looong straights)?

because
1. Merc were slower in speed trap by 2 to 3 kph
2. higher wing giving good traction out of last corner?
3. higher wing giving good initial speed out of the first corner

Half my prediction has come to fruition, one half to go. That was a supremely exciting qualifying session., I don't think that Mercedes has an ounce of speed more in it.

Hamilton didn't start going faster in S1 until the end. All weekend he was slower there. IMO he did a better job than everyone else at the first chicane. Because if you look at what Bottas did in S1, he is way behind the Ferraris.

This was always a Ferrari track. Lewis made it closer than it seems. Tomorrow it should be a cake walk for Ferrari.

yup i was surprised by how much he gained in that run in S1... he was still 3 kph behind the Ferraris...i guess he gained the tenth over the first corner alone....will be interesting to see the onbaord

Kimi was faster than Vettel in the S1 in his final run....but i dont think the slipstream alone gained him 0.161 sec in s3.....it was great run from him in the parabolica and ascari...maybe half a tenth gained by the tow, nothing more

Unfortunately, this is the aspect of Vettel's character I don't appreciate.

He's got a pretty sweet setup at Ferrari. Raikkonen is always put out as the sweeper in qualifying, Raikkonen always gets the 2nd best race strategy, Raikkonen has to move out of the way when he occasionally finds himself in front of Vettel, and Raikkonen is never able to run contra-strategies in the race in the event that they might cause him to finish in front.

All very structurally reinforcing for Vettel, so I guess he must feel like a great injustice has been perpetrated against him today; which completely undermines Kimi's performance.

Unfortunately, I think that will be it for the weekend. If it rains, Kimi will finish 4th or 5th. In the dry, I'm afraid he'll have another iffy start, invariably lose places, and finish 3rd.

My random prediction, I don't want this to happen but it easily could, is Vettel and Kimi crash in the first chicane.
